2009-2012 BMW X5 Diesel

The Problem: The bolt used to secure the engine belt idler pulley could loosen over time and ultimately break. Should this happen, the belt could slip, cutting power assist to the steering rack. The effort needed to crank the steering wheel would be much greater than before, and, BMW fears, could "increase the risk of a crash." Additionally, the belt will no longer drive the alternator, triggering a rash of charging error messages in the instrument cluster.

The Fix: The bolt will be replaced and tightened with a new torque procedure, while its threads will be coated with thread lock.

Vehicles Affected: 29,800 2009-2012 X5 xDrive35d models, built between September 2008 and November 2012. As noted, this only applies to diesel X5 models fitted with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel I-6.

No biggie, at least they're taking care of it BEFORE something bad happens. Props to BMW!

Actually, they are taking care of it because bad things have happened... that's how they found out.
