Wow, that's amazing. I wish they'd race it seriously again. That's one special automobile. Where will the article be published or will it be online?

I've got a D100 that I like a lot. The D70 is somewhat cheaper and about the same camera, isn't it?

The article will be in an upcoming Bimmer magazine article, later in the year. The article will be on the longtail model, and will use this car for the photos. It will include interviews with JJ Lehto and Auberlen about racing the Longtail.

The D70 is very similar to the D100 in many areas, but succeeds it in others, particularly shooting speed.

Amazing that a car with all that CF is already called 'historic'.

I think the Longtail was designed to be somewhat competitive with Porsche's GT1 entry, which was a thinly veiled, all-out attempt to win the sport car series with a car that was barely homologated (ironic history given Porsche's whining about the M3 GTR). Gordon Murray said that he'd have to start all over again to make a car that was competitive with the GT1, which was designed to be a race car from the beginning. That's one of the most remarkable things about the F1 road car for me --- it was not designed for racing, but turned out to be quite successful at it.

Thats right Andre. The original McLaren F1 GTR race car was very similar to the road car, and Gordon Murray really had to be convinced into making that car into a racer, as he had so much demand from privateer teams. There were several teams racing the original version, that when the Porsche 911 GT1 came along, McLaren developed the Longtail to compete more effectively. Both the Porsche 911 GT1 and Mercedes CLK were built from the ground up as race cars, while the McLaren started life as a sports car (though it was the best sports car in the world!).

I'd personally change the "was" to "is", and remove "sports".

David hope you dont mind me linking to this on another site. I posted this on the automotiveforums.com F1 forum where they go nuts over Mclaren (read: know the location of prob 75% of the mclarens in the World) and they love them.
