Horsepower?

Does anyone know of a fairly easy DIY way to get a few extra horsepower? i dont have the ZHP because honestly i didnt like the way the gauges looked when i bought the regular 330ci.. dont judge..
i looked at DINAN air intakes but according to them you have to cut out a bit of plastic near the rad or something confusing like that
basically i would be happy to go from 225 to 235 or 240
thanks!

Yeah, I`m on your six, Sport....

You need to review all the previous threads regarding "increasing performance on the E46", and you`ll quickly come to the conclusion that it`s an exercise in frustration. The popular philosophy around here goes something like this:

"Learn to love what ya got, or buy a faster car"....

good morning FastBob
i have this dilemma concerning alot of the (not so proud) BMW owners (in the US mostly).
i mean seriously, why would you buy a car that you know is not up to your standards specs wise, and then instantly wish to make it faster?
where i'm from, if u can't afford a fast car cuz it's out of your budget, and you want a BMW, you get an E30 for example, put 5-6k in it and voila, u have a fast car.

Wassssupppp, Lebanon ?

Yes, I hear what you`re saying (I think :-). I don`t want to get all philosophical, but it appears that we (pretty much) now have a society where anything that doesn`t generate instant gratification is abandoned in the quest for the next Quick Fix....many seem to have forgotten (or were never aware to begin with) that there`s a PROCESS involved in reaching goals....you don`t just snap your fingers and have the end result appear in front of you. A direct result of our fast food/video game lifestyle ? Who knows....

What I *have* come to realize is that it`s usually a good idea to buy a car that will meet your expectations of what you want it to do. In other words, DON`T buy a 325 automatic, and think that you can turn it into a `Vette killer....that`s not a realistic expectation, and expressing that desire on a forum like this will only lead to ridicule, so why even bother ?

OK, end of rant....

OP... I'll make this SUPER easy on you.

See that link in my sig about the horsepower guide? Yeah. Click that. You'll learn what will work best for you (bang for the buck). Actual gains are going to vary, so don't be disappointed if you end up with less horsepower than you thought.

That reminds me... I need to re-dyno my car. 197 WHP seemed a little low, especially with how hard I pull on things (smolck can back me up on this).

How about let's start with the "real world" change you are expecting to get with an extra 10-15 horsepower. Also, is your car an automatic?

How about lets spend some time talking about why he thought the gauges on the ZHP were so different he hated them so badly. The only thing is the orange needles. Additionally, he said he wanted gains between 2500 and 4200rpm, how is he going to do that? These engines need RPM to make ANY power to begin with. If he wants power in that rpm range he needs a diesel.

Dear FastBob: What are Angel Eyes and how do I get them on my e46????

The word "there" can appear as a pronoun, as in “over there".

"Their" is a possessive pronoun. In a phrase like “Susan and Bill's car,” it could be used to to make a new phrase: “their car.”

”They're” is a contraction of “they are.”
“They are” should always be able to replace “they're.”

Extra credit: It's "I'm looking for an M3" not "I'm looking for a M3".

Not necessarily easy but since a few of you disagree that intakes and exhaust make much power, how about we talk about a much more involved install for more power and go with an ESS TS1 Twin Screw Supercharger so we can get you over 300HP+?

the gauges on the zhp are grey with red needles, not orange, i liked the basic black with white, there is nothing wrong with that.. and ive owned enough BMW inline 6s to know that is where the torque really kicks in and pulls, why would i need the hp at 5000 revs? its unrealistic

E46 3-series non FI w/ torque? this exists?

in all seriousness though. Best bang for the buck to feel power is swapping your differential for more aggresive gearing.

You don't GAIN any power... you just "free it up."

Best bang for the buck power GAINING mod? Nitrous. Say what you want, but it's hard to argue. You won't see me putting nitrous on my car, though.

You`re speaking from an uninformed point of view. BMW I6s offer at least 85% of their peak torque from around 1800 RPMs all the way past 5 grand, where it starts to taper off (but horsepower continues to build right up until redline).

So, when you look at an E46`s dyno chart, the torque curve is not really a "curve" at all....it`s almost table-top flat from end to end, which is an extraordinary accomplishment unmatched by most other engines, which are tuned mostly for mid-range, but run out of steam upstairs.

Many people forget that BMWs were born and bred to the Autobahn, where top-end power and speed are important.
