My wife had an oppurtunity to teach over there. However they are not too friendly on certain women dress attire. For instants she could not wear shorts.

That must have been a great experience for her. Yeah, its understood that whenever you travel through a Muslim country there are certain rules that you must abide by. They consider shorts revealing attire, however I see many tourists wearing shorts without an issue. Btw, if you are travelling through Dubai, leave your Robitussin at home.....it contains a certain level of alcohol and it will be confiscated at the airport if found.lol

She didn't take it because that was one of her no no's. LOL@ the Robitussin comment .

Sorry but I don't agree. I spent a week there on holiday and business. we stayed at the Jumeria Beach Hilton. Very nice hotel.

Other than that I see nothing of interest. it's Las Vegas without the shows, gambling, great resturants, or beautiful women.

Everywhere you look there are billions in unfinished real estate and tens of thousanfs of finished but empty apartments, condos, and houses.

They are not warm to tourists and there are tremendous social pressures on visitors.

They even had to borrow money from Abu Dhabi to finish the "Worlds tallest Building". It's an eyesore with no point except to be tall.

I'm sure you can have a good time there but its not on my top 10 list of dstinations.

Well, I cant say that eveyone will have the same experience as you or I. Personally, I have had the opportuinty to visit Dubai about 15-20 times....often in transit to another destination and can honestly say that there are gorgeous women here, great food(5* restaurants), tons of shows (Festival Bay), and gambling (horse racing). I guess its all about getting out and 'seeing' the city and being open to immersing yourself into a different culture. Do your research (google). Yeah, I will agree that there are some people that may not be 'warm' to tourists...but have you ever been to NYC? You dont always recieve the warmest of welcomes in that city, but some may love it and some may hate it. I happen to enjoy my hometown of NYC.

Had some friends go to Dubai to visit their Mother was there teaching for a couple of years. They loved it also, but were made well aware that even if they are a married couple public displays of affection are not tolerated!

I would like to check it out, not sure I would vacation there if it wasn't tagged on to a business trip though. Hey, as a Southerner born and raised, I have always been pleasantly surprised at how nice people are in NYC. Having been there for business and pleasure a dozen times over the years I have never felt like anyone was rude. Short and to the point, a bit brusque perhaps, but not downright rude. But I do think that they are a lot less tolerant than folks in the South, don't be an idiot and they won't treat you like one! That is OK with me.

First let me apologize if I sounded a bit harsh. This is a great forum and great members and I do appreciate you posting your comments about Dubai.

I'm actually from NY so I know it well. I was born in The Bronx, another not so warm and friendly place these days.

I travel internationally, in fact I'm currently in Tokyo and I was in Singapore last week. I have been from Rome to Rio, and from Moscow to Marrakesh, from Delhi to Detroit and from Turkey to Tampa. I do enjoy the worlds varied cultures. It's amazing to experience the planet.

I just didn't get Dubai. I was designed as a Tourist "resort" but it just didn't feel warm, open, or inviting. That being said it is strictly my opinion and I am certain that many people have a great time there.

Enjoy your holiday, and be sure to hit the Gold Dispensing ATM machine in the Dubai Mall.

I was there in the early 90's and did not like it much. Seems a bit restrictive. But I respect all peoples opinions.

I've got to say, I love how the discussions on this board are civilized and respectful. If this was a discussion on YouTube... well, let's say it would've taken a nasty turn Keep the great conversations coming!

I wanted to go at one point in my life. One day just messing around on the web looked at the flight on "the emirates" and I changed my mind really quick. To get a good laugh, go and price out a flight. It's good comedy.

Actually You don't even have to go to YouTube.
I was on some of the 5 Series forums too but they can be really at street level. I found a fair number of them to be real jerks, so I stopped going there.
Definitely a different caliper () than 6 owners. Everyone on this forum is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

NYC has the nicest people around. Don't let the movies fool you. . I must say though that because I am so used to things being done in a NY minute I get thrown off sometimes when I travel to the Sourthern states where folks take it a bit slower and want to engage in conversations. We all enjoy different things in life which is why we are all unique. To be honest, Dubi is not on my list of places to see as of yet. I'm still working on trying to complete Europe.
