E53 Tranny Repair, Replace, or Run!

I'm considering purchasing a 2001 E53 (4.4) w/ 81K miles $6999, excellent condition BUT tranny needs attention. Should I simply RUN? If not, should I have it replaced or rebuilt? Dealer or private shop? What can I expect in terms of cost?

Since you asked, I'd say run.

my explanation, when you asked that meaned you didn't know any trans shop you can trust. Someone who is knowledgeable to rebuild trans/torque-convertor would only charge around $3K. Dealer and BMW indy shop easily $7-8k. No one would give you a brand new trans only rebuild, mind you.

Indeed. You can find better. Or, now you know to look for one that had a recently rebuilt tranny as that is a frequent repair when nearing 100K.
