Must synthetic oil be used for the power steering and Sls

Hi I need to top up my power steering resevoir and want to if there is other synthetic hydraulic oil I can use instead of Pentosin CHF11s?
Is it possible to flush the system and use mineral hydraulic oil? Iam thinking of alternatives as the Pentosin CHF11s is very expensive.

Are you positive that your supposed to use Pentosin CHF 11 S? BMW only required this on cars equipped with hydraulic rear self leveling, or those with a brake booster...or if you're in really cold climates (like above the arctic circle).

Do you have rear self leveling? What does your PS reservoir look like? Is it the small black plastic reservoir that has a cap that says ATF...or the larger reservoir which indicates to use CHF 11 S?

Click this link for BMW recommended fluids for PS systems. If you actually require CHF 11s...then see section 4.0. If you have the regular system... the see 3.0 as well as the list of compatible fluids: http://www.bimmerboard.com/members/q...0Type-List.pdf

Again...which PS reservoir do you have? Most short wheel base e38s don't have rear self leveling...and your not above the arctic circle...so it would be really rare for you to need CHF 11 S. Don't waste the money if you don't require it nor have the PS reservoir that uses it etc:

You can see the 2 types of lids that originally where available on the left side of pic below (A=ATF & P=Pentosin). If the lid of the smaller ATF reservoir has been replaced recently...it my have the CHF 11s lid screwed on because BMW stopped making the ATF lid a few years ago. The only PS lid they sell now for our e38s is the CHF 11 S lid (which is also used on multiple models even up to some of the new F models)...and they also have a sticker available to place on or near the reservoir if you have an ATF system but require a new lid & have to use the CHF11 S lid.

Hi
Thank you for the info. My E38 does have self levelling shocks at the rear. I was considering the the option of using a different brand synthetic hydraulic oil if it was considerately cheaper. I don't know it the various brand oils are compatible with each other?
