2006 X5 - What to look for?
Morning all, I'm here visiting from the E39 board. Daughter number 1 (currently driving my beloved 2001 530i 5 sp) is looking at a 2006 X5 3.0 with 69,000 miles. I've done a search but didn't really find any good hits. What are the things to look for (common weaknesses, falures, etc) in this model BMW? I'm pretty familiar with the E39 3 liter car - thermostat, water pump, radiator, CCV, VC gasket, front suspension bushings, etc. What should I look for or specifically ask about in the E53 3 liter car?
Thanks,

Same things as your E39, same M54 engine, plus the panoramic roof problem on facelift E53.
Check out xoutpost for more info on X5

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did check on Xoutpost and the E53 seems like a pretty reliable and well designed car. This one doesn't have air suspension or the panoramic sunroof, which appear to be a problem with the higher-spec V8s. The battery drain mystery doesn't seem to have been solved yet, from what I can gather on the internet (?)

OK, well, I found out today that the only things questionable about the car are the following:
1. White lines on the nav display LCD - I understand this will get worse and require replacement of the LCD display? How much? How hard? 2. Ratttle from driver side window. Again, reading this board, most likely is the plastic clips attaching the glass to the regulator slide. Could it be anything else? 3. Ratlle from the drivers side door latching mechanism. Adjustment, or expensive replacement? 4. Rear seat power recline adjustment is intermittent. ?????????? Any advice on the difficulty and cost (DIY), or dealer cost would be greatly appreciated. She's got "B u y - or - D i e" fever for the car but has done her homework and the independent she's buying from seems fairly honest. Just don't want her to have any unpleasant surprizes after the sale!

Looks liked they are going to fix everything except the Nav monitor display. She told me that it has the old cassette player in there, not a CD player - I thought BMW ditched cassettes for the 2002 model year? Was the E53 available with an in-dash CD nav head unit? It has a CD changer in the back but the magazine is jammed, so no CDs. I know where to get this fixed but, again, I recalled that the OEM CD changer went in the console between the seats (or was that the 2007 - on model X%)?
Anybody...... Bueller...... Anybody.......

Tell her to get a PPI from BMW $tealer or BMW Indy. It a MUST.
There are BMWs with 16:9 Nav screen with cassette player behind it. (In the 21st Century, really BMW?

If you haven't already bought it, be sure to get an inspection. Everything already mentioned is a potential problem plus, assuming it's an automatic, these vehicles are vulnerable to expensive transmission problems. The oil and filter should be changed every 50,000 miles. BMW recommends 100,000 on the 2005 model, I'm not sure about the 2006. If you live in a cold climate, consider having the engine oil separator TSB repair done. Cost is $900 to $1,100.
