E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Ed, there is nothing wrong with changing Motor Oil sooner then the factory recommended service interval other then the cost, since used motor oil is now recycled, it's also no longer a environmental issue with disposal, but your motor will last considerably longer using a full synthetic motor oil then by using a standard petroleum based motor oil. When I sold motor oil at Supershops in Santa Clara and the Speed Merchant on Lincoln in San Jose in the 1980's, a case of Valvoline Motor Oil (12 quarts) on sale was 9.99. Mobile One synthetic's cost back then was nearly 8 times more per quart, not so today.

I can get seven quarts of Mobil 1 0w-40 for like $ 45.00 A Mann filter online for under $ 5.00 I change it myself,,, Heck I enjoy changing it, I change it every five thousand miles or so.

Its Cheap relatively speaking. Overkill ? most likely. Why chance something that could cost so much to repair for so little savings in the long run ???

If people want to go 10k or even 15k between oil changes have at it. Oh when you go to sell your car make sure you state in used car ad

You changed the oil every 15k !! good luck with that..

My E39 with 220k gets Syntec and a filter every 10k-- at the suggestion of my mechanic. He sees a few more cars than any of us, and when questioned he replied that his observations led to and justified his recommendation. And in a way, he sells oil- at retail. Lost profit!
