E92 - When to replace water pump, thermostat, hoses, sending unit, etc?
I haven't been able to find a recommendation on performing a preventative cooling system overhaul on the 2007 328i (mine's a coupe). By overhaul I'm considering the water pump, thermostat, level sending unit, overflow tank, hoses and belts.
Is there a consensus on when this should done? Any other parts you would recommend replacing?

Replacing the radiator, expansion tank and hoses at 100K - at least they're inexpensive. Note that, since the belt doesn't drive the pump, your battery will keep it running so that's not a critical issue. |

If you want to practice aircraft maintenance
If you want to practice aircraft maintenance.
Get the Mike Miller maintenance schedule and rebuild the cooling system according to his schedule . Google Mike Miller BMW |

Mr. Miller sez: It actually pains me to recommend replacing the entire cooling system preventively before 100,000 miles, as above. Yet experience has shown this maintenance is cheap compared to the alternative. It is unbelievable how many engines are destroyed in these cars by premature cooling system failures. BUT goes on to say: The N-series engines do not seem to suffer the sort of regular and systematic cooling system failures that led me to recommend replacing the entire system on the above engines as a preventive measure. If your BMW is a 2006 or newer and not an E46, then you've got an N-series engine. OK.....who gets this witty joke? . Last edited by CALWATERBOY; 06-29-2012 at 06:57 AM. |

If it was a 2006 325i or 330i or a 335i I would suggest you to do it at 80K miles. There is a trend
But given the very rare occurrences on the N52N (redone in part 2007+), I would pass (I am in the same boat).

Thanks for the feedback. It is making me feel better about my 2007 328i (coupe). I'm at 68K miles. This and Mike Miller's stuff has me feeling better about my cooling system.
I had overhauled the cooling system in my last bimmer, an E46 - 2000 323ci, which I know was a good move. I wasn't looking forward to doing it again to be honest.
