1994 525i Auto transmission problem!

Hi, I purchased a 1994 525i in good conditions except for the auto transmission, the issue is that it seems to only run in 1st and 2nd gear, it wont change to other gear and sometimes it wont even change to 2nd gear..

Now I know for a fact that the car has not been to transmission service and has 160K miles on it, also I am not getting the TRANS PROGRAM message, any ideas?

You need to check the fluid level and condition.

I checked the fluid it is black but it doesn't smell burned also I think at one time the owner must have put reverse gear while driving because the shifter didn't have the push knob working, could that mean the transmission is gone?

First of welcome to the fest Enrique my name is Noel . Do you have any reputable transmission repair shops in Guatemala ? Someone you can trust . But in all honesty , being that you stated that the fluid is black makes me wonder on the condition of the tranny , and it doesn't look to promising .

HI everybody! I just had my transmission service done.. changed oil and filter
Unfortunately the problem persists, it doesnt shift to from 2nd to 3rd gear and up

I am considering that since I will have to rebuild the transmission why not do a 5 speed manual swap instead?

what you think??

Why not?

Search google for "M50 Manual swap". There should be a few good threads.

Hallelujah.
Soon as I saw who did the swap, I knew it would be a great write-up.

Hi, I've been thinking about that 5 speed swap, the difficult thing is that where I live there is few E34 and nowhere to find a used transmission
If I go replacing the Auto transmission would any GM 4S 310R would do? or does it have to come from the same model as my car?

Not sure, but I believe the internal gearing changed for the 93-95 GM 525i tranys.

The transmission uses GM (General Motors) clutch packs and is assembled in France (Getrag) making it it one of the most "state of the art" automatic transmissions in existance for that year. The tranny should have been serviced (i.e. filter, fluid, pan gasket and some TLC) before the 150,000 mile mark otherwise, you're looking at a $4,000.00 + transmission replacement. Don,t finance your mechanic's new car, ski boat, or kid's first year of college and sell your beloved BMW for parts or ? - I'm the 2nd owner of my 525i and I have all the service records. The suggested maintenance intervals are key. The car will go 300,000 plus if maintained and loved, and, will of course, drive like a BMW.

Hi, thanks for all the info I have found something really interesting about my BMW transmission.. first of all the dashboard LCD display doesnt work only ocassionaly but when I start driving it I find that it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear just fine but no 3rd gear.. and when in 2nd gear if I go to high revs the dash rings a warning sound and all of a sudden Im stuck in 1st gear, no more shifts only 1st gear.
Then I turn the car off and back on and it starts shifting 1st and 2nd gears again just fine.. Im almost convinced it must have an electrical problem related to the TCM or maybe a solenoid valve?

What you think?

Hello Enrique. I know it's a long shot, but have your alternator checked. I have read on this forum of people whose alternator was dying and was causing some of the problems like yours. I would not replace it unless your current one checks out bad.

I agree with BMR_LVR. Mine has 314k on the clock and I was getting the same error message when I bought it.

You can change the voltage regulator, but I opted in a rebuilt alternator from BMAparts and the error message went away.

Good Luck

See if this helps understand how to check trany fluid in a e34 without a dipstick. I let my independent BMW shop do it.
