2007 X5/E70 Water Pump Replacement

Hello,
I am new to the forum and I'm attempting to replace my water pump after it went out at 64K. I cannot identify which is the tensioner. Looks like there is a tensioner under the alternator (16mm bolt) and another under the water pump (takes a 45T Torx). You can supposedly see the tension releasing after unscrewing, but I have turned both and I don't see anything happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is normally a single plastic pulley with a centre bolt that loosens the the inside one winds the pulley up and down. If you go to the dealer that you buy the parts from they should be able to print a flimsy out with the parts diagram.

Hope this helps.

It is electric pump. Do you still need to remove belt and pulley

I do still need to remove the belt and pully. I think the water pump I received is belt driven, but I'm not sure. I see there is a large Torx hole, which I put a breaker bar on to release the tension, but it does not move enough to remove the belt. I might have access to a BMW mechanic through a friend, so I'm going to see today if he makes house calls.

It seems I do not have to take the belt off after all. They sent me the wrong water pump. So much for the " guaranteed correct part". Thanks for all the help.

Hey any tips on doing this repair yourself? I am about to tackle this in the next day or so. I plan on replacing the thermostat and water pump at the same time.
