i have the 16:9 colour screen in my 03 530 , the nav constantly re-boots so all i have most of the time is a flickering screen , however , if i hold the eject button down on the nav player in the boot (trunk) it fires up as designed ! what the hell is going on ???

well i sorted this on my own , the ribbon that joins the 2 dvd mechanisms together needed a clean up at its contact points , screen is now spot on , thanks for the help people

Nice catch.
For future reference the DVD player mechanism is replaceable so if you ever run into a problem with the actual DVD mechanism. You can buy replacement parts for just the laser or the entire mechanism. I opted to replace the entier DVD mechanism to fix mine a few years ago. BMW Xoutpost has very good forum on the MKIV Nav.
