Speedo and Tach Illumination?

Are the numbers on the Speedo and Tachometer supposed to be lit up when the headlights are not on?
My instruments cluster is not lit..... and it seems awlfully dark. It lights when the headlights are on though.
This for a 2008 750.
How does yours work?

I believe that is normal. If the engine is cold and the "variable" tach redline is showing, the gauges are lit; if the cruise control is set, the gauges are lit; if you have a navigation destination active, the gauges are lit other wise they are "dark".

Very definitive answer GeorgeT. Thank you. Im having some Gremlins in this car now so I guess Im a bit sensitive to what it is supposed to be doing
