torque angles
according to TIS, the torque specs for the m62 vibration dampner are 100nm then 60* torque angle. Another 60* torque angle then 30* torque angle.
Is this right? Do I torque it to 60 degrees, release then re-torque to 60 degrees? I was thinking about getting an electronic torque wrench with angle. gearwrench makes one. Thanks |

First tighten the bolt to 100nm then continue an additional 60+30 =90 degrees.
What i did was tighten to 100nm then mark the bolt at 12 o'clock and then mark the case at 3 o'clock. Turn the bolt until it lines up at 3 o'clock and theres your additional 90 degrees. Bmw actually makes a magnet that has the degrees but its just one more rediculious special tool that you can get around buying by being smart.

So 60 plus 30, got it.
I should disregard the extra 60 the Tis mentions? Thanks |

Just curious, is this bolt a one time use stretch to torque type?

The parts guy at the dealer said no but i can't take his word for it since he said there are no stretch bolts on the e39. I know the main crank bolt is.
I was under the assumption that if it required torque angles it might be a strectch bolt. |

BMW uses the angle tightening method for both stretch and non-stretch bolts.
Angle tightening removes the effects of thread & bolt head friction, which interferes with torque measurement. It's also MUCH easier to tighten to an angle then to find a 450 ftlb torque wrench that's only accurate to +/- 15%. |

Sorry i forgot what the spec is for the angle. Do the whole thing that it states. I beleive the reason e book divides the angle up in pieces is because the bmw angle gauge doesnt turn that far in one shot. 60+60+30=150 which is the same as from 12 to 5 i believe.
The guy is wrong. The e39 uses alot of stretch bolts and i know this for a fact because i have worked on most of them. There are 16 in the wheel bearings alone. Yes the crank bolt is one time use. Last thing you want to do is snap the head off when reinstalling to the superhuman torque specification.

FWIW, the TIS specifies to replace the bolt.
