wow sounds a little bit like a monster truck lol.

i started my car for s's and g's when i chopped it off at the y right before the resonator and it sounded like a cross between a mustang and high power motor boat lol.

Ever since I purchased my 540i I have been experimenting with various exhaust setups in search of that "perfect sound".

Stock exhaust = very quiet, the intake is more audible than the exhaust.

Muffler delete = quiet, but has a deep rumble (imagine IMAX Bass). You can really hear the engine "breathing", not "roaring" under heavy acceleration. This is my current setup.

Stock exhaust with y-pipe cutout installed BEFORE resonator/mufflers-this is a loud aggressive setup with some drone at cruising. Has a VERY muscular sound, a refined German V8 roar. I would assume that 70% of the exhaust exits through the cutout and bypasses the y-res and mufflers, and 30% goes through the stock exhaust and is muffled.

Y-resonator and mufflers completely removed-open pipe after cats terminating before rear diff. This is absurdly loud and shakes the cabin badly. I drove with my car like this for a few weeks while fabricating some things and actually got a ticket for no exhaust (go figure). I would not recommend this setup. It's not for the faint of heart. The sound under WOT, though, is not comparable to anything else….it's out of this world. Still has that German DTM V8 roar.

Open headers-have done this a time or two while fabbing parts or fixing something. The refinement from the above setup (if any) is completely gone. This will make your children cry. Louder than anything else, and doesn't have the nice german sound anymore. Sounds exactly like a 1978 Chevy Malibu demolition derby car. Fun, though.

One of the reasons I really love the M62/E39 combo is that you can modify the exhaust to get a very wide range of results, for very cheap (if you know how to fabricate). You don't have to buy any fancy mufflers or resonators-the M62 sounds best uncorked.

Hell, that's not to hard to do in a 540....just pull off a few plug wires and no exhaust.
That thing must have a BIG cam in it, love the idle.

Here's mine with no exhaust just after I put the M5 diff in.
Like nsogiba said it's LOUD when you are taking it thru the gears on the street.

SOunds great Jim.

I just grew up on big overlap cams and early American iron so I will always be a little partial to that choppy idle.

These are the cars I grew up with.
