Pardon my noob ignorance, what's the difference to the E-sys?

Well, never mind, search is your friend :

E-Sys is similar to ISTA/P for Progamming. ISTA/D is for Diagnostics. It has wiring diagrams and diagnosis, but also repair and replace, training, and other documents. essentially DIS, WDS, TIS, etc. all combined.

Thanks, good stuff as usual!

Slightly deviating from subject, try adding 5AS to your FA. Then go to HUD and see the new options, including SLI ON/OFF...

A seller recommended to me the following Chinese ICOM Clone, however, I did not purchase it, so I cannot personally vouch for it:

http://www.chinamaster88.com/En/ProductView.asp?ID=104

I believe the cost is around $700, a bargain compared to an original BMW ICOM, which is north of $3500.

I am trying to go the software ICOM Emulator VM route, which should cost around $150, but I need to better understand it's limitations. As I understand it, it can be used with E-Net for ISTA/D fully, however, with ISTA/P it is limited to Coding and no Programming.

Wow ! Finally ... Thanks Shawn!... Not sure how many people would really realize the effort in making these things available ....

And we should look in to the idea of gathering funds so that we can get hold off the software which are financially limited... There are hundreds/thousands? of folks who got benefit out of our mission , i hope it shouldnt be a issue.

Icom emulator is no longer for sale At the 150 price, in fact it's now up to 350 for it. I inquired about it a month ago and it was at 15O but now it's jacked up to 350. Sucks. So it's either Chinese Icom for 700+ or Icom emulator for 35O. At those prices clone would be better

Supply & demand...but not worth it for that price. The clone I saw close to the ~600 already with shipping. Wait an see the number of offers in alibaba, as they go up, the price goes down.

ICOM clone down to $466...

@Shawn, according to this document, wouldn't we only need ICOM A to use ISTA/D in our F10's -> laptop ethernet?

If yes then ICOM A alone is available for $235..rather take that than a vm emu..

Agreed, but where can you buy quality Chinese ICOM A Only clone?

Also..according to this document, we might need a specific firmware on the device..'By default supported only chinese clone ICOM with corresponding firmware version'

The ICOM firmware version should match the ISPI version of your ISID or ISSS. (i.e. if your ISID/ISSS is version 2.9.x, you should flash the 2.90.x firmware for ICOM). Flashing something like the 3.x ICOM firmware may render the ICOM incompatible with your ISID/ISSS until you either downgrade the ICOM using the restore procedure or upgrade your ISID/ISSS.

The VMWare is it's own ISTA. If you have a native ISTA, you wouldn't use the VMWare version.

ISTA/P via ICOM is designed to easily allow you to program the entire car via a Measures Plan, from one Integration Level to another Integration Level, and to Import and Activate FSC Codes.

E-Sys, which can also use ICOM, can do the same, although it is not as straight forward. E-Sys is actually better in that like WinKFP for Exx Chassis, you can target a single ECU to be programmed, where with ISTA/P and its Measures Plan, the whole car must be done.

At the end of the day, I don't think ICOM-A is a must have, however, it is a faster more reliable interface for programming than ENET, and if it is priced reasonably, I'd pick one up if you want to be able to flash ECU's. If you only plan to FDL Code, or occasionaly flash a single ECU with E-Sys, you don't really need it.

Same here. I think $150 is the sweet spot for me.

I have not connected to my car with it, as I have just been using it for documentation. That said, I don't see why the car couldn't be running, same as with E-Sys.

Sorry, but I have no source for TSB's. :(

Yes, it is very hard to find. Unfortunately, a few day's ago my RapidShare account was locked and all my content deleted.

I will be in Paris Thursday and Friday night. Maybe I can give you what you need.
