anyone hear about EPA/CARB hold on 2013 335?

Finally got my order for 2013 335 placed last week - this morning talked with my CA about PCD, as I'd seen so many glowing reviews on these boards....

He called back this afternoon telling me that there's a approximately 2 week hold on all the first 2013 335 being produced that happens on the initial cars on any new year models?! He stated mine wasn't just within the first 100 or so, but within the first 10?!

I don't know how he got those numbers, and he also mentioned this was "insider" information....wanted to know if anyone else who's ordered a 2013 335 has heard anything to this effect.....

Looking at PCD, he said they were also full until Oct 5 at the earliest, so I can take delivery here in Houston in approx mid Sept or go for PCD sometime after Oct 5.....

Searched around the internet and only thing I've seen about any of this EPA/CARB hold is for some 2013 X6 earlier this year......

This type of hold is, in fact, quite common.

We were told the same thing ! We are willing to wait , but it is hard to understand , as its the same car and engine as the 2012 We hope to hear soon. Good luck, if you can wait till October , it will be fun drive back to Houston. We could be on the Same Boat Its been a tough year to be a Padres or Cubs fan again in 2013 ! Keep in touch !

figured since I was so close to 2013 that I might as well wait a bit and get the car exactly spected out how I wanted - didn't know the wait would be quite so long.....

I wonder if that 2 week hold and October PCD date is for all vehicles or just 335i's. Hoping the case will be different for 328i's...

If you look at the specs on BMWUSA site, the BMW 0-60 ratings are much lower for 2013 models. The 335xi auto is only 4.8s for example, I don't know if any of these have any impact to the EPA certification though.

Just got a reply from my CA. When she submitted a request for PCD on my 2013 328i she got this email.

Quote:
....Thank you for submitting a Performance Center Delivery reservation for xx. Unfortunately, this production number (######) is a new model or new model year and we cannot offer a delivery date at this time. EPA and CARB Certifications are issued by the government and must be obtained for every model every year, regardless of any change (or not) in the production of the vehicle.

Please inform your client that we will contact you with a delivery date as soon as all EPA and CARB Certifications have been received by BMWNA and the holds have been removed. Should the client wish to cancel you will need to submit a cancellation form which can be found on CENTERNET...

Looks like it never ends. First it was the allocations, then the EPA/CARB, then the PCD being pushed back... I hate to say this but I may just skip the PCD if it means that I can drive my car earlier by shipping directly to the dealer. I was so looking fwd to PCD but if means waiting till October and beyond I vote for skipping it just so that I can still get some drive in before the summer is completely out.

yes, starting to feel that way.....is PCD worth the extra 3-4 weeks wait as well as having to drive it back? It'd be a lot more fun if I was road tripping home, taking my time, but essentially planning for PCD and straight drive hom.....

not sure what to do...

Appreciated the update on EPA/CARB and PCD. I may be in the same boat for a 328ix. My car was scheduled to be completed on 5 Jul and I have only seen one MY 13 car that was finished earlier on 4 Jul. I don't know when the car was actually completed as my phone updates always seem to lag a day or so after others that had the same start/complete production dates. ( I have a Vehicle Inquiry Status report request in to my CA.) But I can understand a slip of a day or two for whatever reason. Can I presume that the 2 week hold is at the factory and if so I am not in your boat as my car is reported to being headed to the departure port as are numerous others that were produced in the first official production week or as in my case a week prior. But even so a 2 week hold is tolerable for me but the developing PCD situation may not be.

In mid May when we order the car I was told the first date I could get ED was 15 Sept. With that information we decided this did not fit our schedule. In June we again looked at an ED and the earliest day available was something like 18 Sept. So again we decided again an ED. On 12 June I requested a PCD delivery date for mid August and I was notified that PCD is not providing any PCD delivery dates until the car has EPA/CARB approval and once approved they would notify me of PCD available dates and the priority for dates would be based on when the request came in. (In other words the earlier requests would get priority in picking the earlier dates.) My hope is that some dates are being held open but I have no info that this is the case. If no PCD dates are available until early October I will be upset as this is information that should be provided to the customer once known. Are all cars produced in July MY13 cars or are some MY12 still being produced? All July production cars I have seen are MY13 but I haven't been watching that close on other models. If true what cars are filling the PCD delivery dates prior to Oct? It would seem likely that they would not be MY12 cars produced in June. In my case waiting 3 months for PCD after the car was produced is probably not worth an hour or two on the track as much as I would like to do it. For me the factory tour and museum are in my opinion mostly time fillers as I have been thru the Volvo factory and museum. This situation will be especially concerning to me if my the car is put on a boat to Charleston prior to PCD giving me an available PCD delivery date more than a month and a half later than originally requested. Hopefully BMW NA is not playing this game and at this point I trust them. I think trust but verify might be the best and if I don't hear something by next week will start pressing the matter.

Greg,

Has this hold been released? Is there a similar hold for the 2013 F10s?

I believe the hold is for all MY 13 cars not yet approved. I know of no MY 13 cars being approved but I have not been checking that so its a large guess. PCD is not giving delivery dates for cars not approved so I suspect that will be my first source for knowing the MY 13 328 ix has been approved. Someone had mentioned that their car was put in hold for two weeks but that point has past. The first MY 328's (and I suspect other cars produced in early July) should be arriving in the US shortly if not already here. Does EPA do the testing in the US or in Germany? My car is enroute and my guess is an Aug 3 or 7 arrival but I have not been able to find the ship name just guessing on when I got the enroute info and ships in harbor at that point and when they will arrive Charleston. Anyone have any better info.

I just got dinged with this myself for a 2013 328i.
Kind of pissed about it, honestly.

My car is sitting in the port of baltimore awaiting some government stooge to do whatever test it is that they do.

My CA was surprised that this hadn't been handled already and seemed to think this was scheduled for sometime late next week. BMWNA I think is annoyed because they expected about 15k sales for July which they aren't going to get. So it sounds like while the hold is common, there may actually be a delay here by the EPA.

You'd have thought they'd have flown the EPA people to Germany to test there and done this ahead of time.

It's not BMW guys. Do some reading. It happens pretty much every MY. Usually resolves quickly.

They can ship to the US before they get all of their EPA certifications, but they can't be released to dealerships. The cars will wait at the VPC:

Welcome to your tax money at work fellas. The way things are going I just hope I have my car by Xmas. Which btw makes me think for those that are gadget freaks to you consider waiting for the upgraded NAV system? I could care less but I can see a few of you saying why get the car mid October when I can get the new NAV system if I wait 6 more weeks.

Justin I been meaning to ask you man how in the hell are you going to control yourself not going flat out on the autobahn (if you care about breaking the car in). One of the things on my to do list is do an ED (probably the next car), drive around Europe for a couple of weeks and then on the way back take the car to the Nürburgring for a few laps.

11 days of driving before I get to the first unlimited stretch. I planned my trip that way, so that I would have the time to get to learn the car on smaller roads and mountain passes. When leaving Fussen en route to Rothenburg, I'll be broken in or close to it. That's when we we open her up. Then we get to the ring two days later.

Just got word from the dealership that our MY13 328i has been cleared and will be shipped from the Brunswick, Ga port to Atlanta by August 5.

We too are passing on the delivery to the Performance Center. I bit of a bummer, but excited nonetheless.

This is excellent news. I hope the 335s get moving along as well. Was contemplating passing on PCD if appointment went into October. I hope something is available in September, in which case I'll still keep it.
