No Start Problem!!!! Please Help

Ok. So I have a 96' 328i.

I got this car as a hand-me-down from my brother, and love it, but knew nothing about cars or BMW's (and wouldn't still if it weren't for this site). About 6 months ago the tumbler broke and the key would just spin in the cylinder. My sister's fiance is a mechanic and I got a new tumbler from him and was able to take off the antenna ring and the tumbler out and fix the problem myself (like I said; only with the help of this site and some youtube videos). Anyways the car got towed at some point and would not start again (not crank or anything... when the key was turned nothing would happen except the electric would turn on). I thought that it might be then antenna ring because even though I had tried to be careful when I was fixing the tumbler I had pulled out the green wires that connect to the antenna ring and when I was originally fixing it, it would not crank or start at first until I put them back in.

So, it would not start in the tow yard and I had stripped the wire and reattached the green wires to the antenna ring and the car started up just fine.

About 2 weeks ago, I went to turn the key and nothing happened except power to the vehicle (no crank or anything... the same as before). I jiggled the wires and antenna ring thinking that it has something to do with them and tried to start it again and it worked fine. It happened once or twice and I did the same thing with jiggling the wires and ring and it would start up fine.

SO, about a week ago it would simply not start again. I jiggled the wires and antenna ring (not the best long term solution I know) and nothing.. No crank.. just power. I had a mechanic come and try and fix the connection to the antenna ring. One of the wire strips that comes out of the rings and touches the connector of the green wires had been shoved down into the antenna ring. He was not able to get it out but (and bear with me I was not there) but he broke off piece of the ring pulled out the wires and soldered them together. This did not work. Same thing.. Power.. but no crank no start.

He then went under the glove box and clipped green wires (i think and put them together) the car would crank but not start. He got a new antenna ring and replaced the soldered one. He checked the fuze box, the CPS sensor, injection fuel relay.. all were good. He worked on the car for a long time and was unable to get it to do anything but crank. We read a thread on here with a title "no start problem EWS finally resolved"...

We then got a new DME (red i think from a 525 or something) and still the car would only crank but not start. We sprayed started fluid in the intake manifold and it would sound like it wanted to start but nothing. He then put the green wires back in the EWS and the car would NOT crank again. So he cut and put them back together... Tried the old DME and the new one again and still it would only crank.

I will try and think more if he did anything else.. he did pull out the back seat and check something there as well but like I said I dont know a ton about cars or BMW's...

Now I don't know what to do... any help would be greatly appreciated. I have talked to several mechanics and they all say that it isnt the EWS or the wires because if it was the car should start and then shut-off... but I really don't think thats what it is because those wires were the problem previously and the car would not crank or anything either. Please please help!

Sounds like a problem related to your fuel injection system. There a few electronical interconnected fuel supplies. You should start by checking your
fuel pump all the way to your fuel injectors, one step at a time.

^ Whoa whoa whoa..

Something really silly is being overlooked..
Find a more knowledgeable BMW mechanic.

Get your DME, wires & antenna ring sorted out.
Confirm they are good, and the correct parts..

I really hope this helps!

So,
do you not think that it has something to do with the EWS system... because, when the wires were reconnected and the antenna ring was fixed with multiple DME's tried it did not even crank. (meaning that it wouldn't be the EWS?) Even though the same thing happened before and it ended up being the wires a few days earlier?

Slightly confused..
I think you have that mixed up.. Or i am misunderstanding you..

If you have bypassed the EWS properly.. (NO EWS)
Have the correct DME..
and your car was running normally before this problem.. something is being overlooked.

The ignition that your sister's fiance, the mechanic installed..
Was it installed properly?
Did he get the right one for your car?.. NON-EWS, EWS1, EWS2..?

Your wires, antenna, ignition, ignition ring & DME's need to be cross checked and CONFIRMED to be the CORRECT, WORKING parts

Your EWS may have to be re-sync'd.

You're in Napa.. take it to BMW of SF..
The time, the money, the energy that you have spent trying to "fix" this issue... It might be worth it..

EDIT:
You should give those links from my previous post a read.. very similar ISSUE to what you are experiencing.
What color label.. and last 3 digits are on the DME's your trying to plug in?
