I want auto fold like my Ford 350 Super Duty. Considering there are wiring harnesses for about everything else tucked in to my E53 can I retrofit? And I love my heated seats. I want a heated steering wheel, too. Why would the Germans give me a warm rear but leave me cold hands and a warm heart?

Take the painted mirror cover off. Right at the base, pivot point, you will see a little black plastic cover. Take that off. Then there is a small microswitch under it. Usually the small metal tab is broken or sometimes even missing. That is the problem. Glue the tab back in place and you should be good to go. But I started seeing them fail even with perfect tabs. There is supposed to be an aftermarket fix for it but never saw it in person. Usually if the tabs are good it needs a new mirror.

pin replacement

I had this problem and occasionally also mirrors that would not unfold again, and after having paid BMW for several new mirrors I started replacing the pin with part of a paper clip. Best fix ever...
