You can call it "speculation" if you want, but this is based on a lot of research. I spend a good deal of time discussing the future of BMW with both people at BMW, who can only say so much. And other automotive journalists who have a good sense of where the auto market and BMW are going. The writing is on the wall, I'm connecting A, B and C.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens, you seem to have the info from BMW corporate but I still don't get it from a marketing perspective. The 3 series has always had a sedan and a coupe. All of the sudden you start calling the coupe a 4 series, what's the up side. The M3 coupe will now be the M4 coupe. If BMW decides to do the M3 sedan again it will still be called an M3,when the original M3 was only available in the coupe for the first and third generation and sells way more than the sedan. How does it benefit BMW to do it?If it was my company I wouldn't do it.One thing is for sure,if they have decided to do this then the exterior and interior of the two cars will have to be totally different. It would be ridiculous for them to keep the same basic design and call them two different series.

It's still going to have a Roundel on the hood. That's the branding most people care about.

Mercedes has already begun the process of realigning/renaming their models, e.g. CLK is now the E Coupe. The next CL will be a S Coupe. Audi abandoned their 80 nameplate despite 30 years of history. Anyone complaining today about the A4/S4/RS4 nameplates? So, I think 1,3,5,7 for sedans; 2,4,6,8 for coupes; X1,X3,X5,X7 for traditional SUVs; and X2,X4,X6 for CoupeUVs makes sense to me. If they happen to make an abomination, then call it a GT.

So what happens with the 640 gram coupe. It is a sedan but they call it a coupe? Now head...blown!

BMW tell us that the Gran Coupe is a Coupe, so it must be a 6 Series. Right? I guess it comes down to how does one classifiy a coupe versus a sedan. Is just the number of doors or does a low roofline that makes a coupe?

Well, here's an official standard: The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) distinguishes a coupe from a sedan primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupe as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume. Fixed-roof two door cars with that do not meet this spec are two door sedans. Thanks Wikipedia!

Just another nail in the BMW corporate coffin. With all the serious mistakes BMW has been making lately I suspect they must have new executives making bad decisions.

After 16 years of 3 series loyalty I had already written them off anyways when I test drove the new generation 3 series. The car has many problems but the 3 show stoppers have to be:

1. Auto On/Off that can't be disabled other than every time you get in the car.
2. The cheap idrive screen that appears to be an afterthought when the designers realized they had forgotten to make room for the display. It looks like my daughter left her IPad propped up on top of the dash.
3. The electric steering disqualifies the 3 series from being an "Ultimate Driving Machine" and that's the essence of any BMW.

That was exactly the look BMW was going for. They wanted it to look like an iPad or flat screen TV. I understand that you don't like it, just clarifying that it was what they intended.

I also don't think the ESP rules out it being a good driving car. The NSX has electric steering, as does the Tesla and both are considered to have great driving dynamics.

It's becoming apparent that BMW's definition of "Coupe" is the shape of the roofline: 6er GC, X6, and the rumored 4er GC all have 4 doors.

Agree with most, "4" won't have a great connotation for Chinese as a huge market in China, and all over the World. "4" is "Si" or translated as Dead!! They should reconsider..Ironically, I have Z4!! LOL

Keep the irreplaceable 3 Series name and bring back the "ci" designation for the coupes (and "cic" for the 'verts).

BMW recently recognized as the MOST VALUABLE BRAND IN THE WORLD and they are too stupid to recognize a huge part of that is the 3 Series, including the coupe, and the ///M3, which virtually every person on the planet associates with a coupe or convertible.

This 4 Series crap is a bigger corporate identity blunder than New Coke!!! The entire 3 Series history is built on the two door 3er. Without which there would be no 3 Series sedan at all!!! This "4 Series" is NOTHING SHORT OF BMW BLASPHEMY. It is shameful to the brand.

I guess I ought to email this rant to BMW.

Oh, how they used to mock me in 2007.

New Coke failed, but I love the Diet New Coke (Coke Zero).

I guess we are lucky there weren't internet forums when BMW abandoned their tried-and-true three & four digit number (501/502/503/600/1500/1800/2000/2002/2500/2800) nomeclature for the radically nontraditional 3,5,6,7 Series naming convention. Just imagine... no one had a public forum to vent their outrage.

So are we talking about changing the name of the M3Ci? Oh wait there isn't an M3Ci! It was just the M3, but I thought the M3 had four doors. I wonder who started that confusing naming convention? Oh I wish there was away to name this cars so I wouldn't be confused. Hmmm.... the M3 (the coupe and convertible, not the identically named sedan) is dead long, long live the M4!

TBH, for the VAST MAJORITY of non-Fester type potential buyers out there.........and since "4" is higher than "3" and it costs more - it MUST be faster AND better just because! *tries to "race" a 335 in their 428 and loses* DERP
