Fuel Filter in Front drivers Side of Engine Compartment

Hey Guys, Some great stuff going on here. Most have done some great pics and videos for us DIY'ers and I have tackled many projects that I didn't quote have the confidence to do until I found this site.

I have a 2003 745 and am getting ready to attempt the Alternator bracket gasket, (i'm about 80/20 still) but every time I clean my driveway I say "tomorrow i'm gonna do it" so I'm getting closer.

Any way I was looking in engine compartment the other day and noticed this....it looks like a fuel filter for an old car....but its not attached on one side..can anyone tell me what this is and what it attaches to on the top side?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...even if its just the name of the part and I can research from there

Just to be clear - this has nothing to do with fuel as in gasoline. It's a filter for the dynamic drive. It's my impression that it is used to keep contaminants out of the dynamic drive system.

This is the fuel (as in gasoline) filter (#5)
