Cabin noises after 340i caught in downpour

Hey all.

Earlier this week I was driving home during an extremely nasty thunderstorm and now I notice cabin noises that were not present before. I can only describe them as "creaking" type noises coming from the roof area of the auto.

This was a torrential downpour and of course the Windows and moonroof were completely closed.

Anyone run into anything similar?

We have had some big rains here in Texas, but no creaks or groans in my car.

Roof area as in moonroof or roof area as in top of doors? If it's the latter, wipe down the felt that surrounds the windows on the doors.

I second the felt. If it's a creaking noise, it's the felt rubbing against the trim. Apply some car wax to the area where the felt touches the trim. It will go away for about a month and then you can reapply. I'm letting mine get bad so the dealer can apply Teflon tape to the shadow line trim. That apparently fixes it

have you considered opening and closing the moonroof. like full retraction of the moonroof and re-close? I sometimes have a similar issue if the car is seating in the garage at work all day (about 10 hours) and then while driving home it creaks a bit over bumps. if i retract and close the moonroof, it seems to clear it up. i guess basically resetting the seals.

This is a common problem that BMW know about. I just took my 340i top the stealership and they fixed it by replacing the seals. They said that it's a flaw where regular washing of the car can cause the creaking of the door sills.

This is my bet as well. The moonroof has drains that drain water even when the roof is closed. I would open the roof, wipe as much of the rubber area as possible and close it. I have had this happen in my previous car.

Okay thanks for all the advice and insight. I suspect you guys are onto something with the seals being the issue.

Is there a TSB on this issue?

The problem is most noticeable when the car has sat for a few hours and I drive off and pass once small bumps. It's surprisingly loud.

A quote from the link I posted.

"Client states there is a creaking type noise heard from the door seals while driving over uneven drive ways
Cause: Teflon Tape
5116345 Applied teflon tap(e)
238 WC
1 83-19-9-407-798 Film tape: 832518

3799 Door seal making contact with roof, dirt and silicone causing noise. Verified noise coming from door seals. As a reference of SIB 51 28 10.
Applied silicone remover to both rain gutters and applied transparent teflon tape. Noise is now gone."

Brought car to my friendly local BMW CA today and she had shop foreman go for test ride with me. Shop foreman diagnosis is that the door seals are rubbing and he is going to recommend teflon tape fix for this even though the TSB around the teflon tape is not specific to the 3 series. He did say they have had success on 3 series cars using this fix.

Will update thread when I pick the car up later today.

They tell me that to do this fix they also need to replace all four door guides, so they will have the car till tomorrow.

Yippy.

At least getting fixed.

So I got the car back and the noises are gone.

They did not do the Teflon tape, instead replacing all four door guides per BMW SIB 51 10 16 which says that if the door guides revision index is less than 03 they need to be replaced. Mine measured 02.

Info could be handy for any other owners down the line that run into similar issues. SIB must be newer, I could not find it online.

Since this problem literally started as I was sitting in a huge downpour I have to speculate that the large volume of water caused the door seals to separate just enough for the problem to become noticeable... but likely the car was "defective" from the factory.

Glad to hear everything is quiet now. I had a few factory defective issues too. Not sure if it bad quality control or bad luck.

I just got mine back from the dealer after complaining about creaking noises. They did apply the teflon tape under warranty, and on my drive home today the creaking was gone. From what I have read, this problem is specific to the shadowline trim and does not affect cars with the chrome trim.

Cabin noises after 340i caught in downpour

Dropping mine off today with the SIB numbers in hand. Hopefully they will remedy the creaks that have plagued me for a year.

Update: I had the updated door guides, apparently, but they had to order another part. I'm assuming the Teflon tape. Could be a couple days.

Good thing I have a good loaner

Well, they called me Saturday to come pick the car up. They applied anti-static cleanser and said it was fixed.

Picked up the car, drove around the lot and on the first speed bump... Creaks...

I drove back around to the service and we've been going back and forth all day today.

Shop foreman refuses to apply Teflon tape under warranty and says SIB for Teflon tape does not apply to my car.

Index for door seals is 13.

My choices are to do it myself, or take it to another dealer as I'm in Metro Atlanta there are 4-5.

To top off the dealer not fixing the problem, I get my car back and this is how they leave the door jams.

Cabin noises after 340i caught in downpour

Wet? Yes. Water? No. That's a greasy mess that they left. I know it's minute to some people, but for as much money as this car cost, they should at least clean up their mess.

To add, I am the guy that has a note that I leave in the car asking them to kindly not wash as I am OCD about the paint being scratched. My SA knows that and laughs at the note every time. It's never washed. I haven't washed the car for a month so that the door seals would get really bad. You'll notice the rain water marks on the top of the side skirt.

I suppose I could send an email to my SA, but what good will that do, and it will only make him feel guilty about me being even more dissatisfied with my service. I suppose using this thread to vent is de-railing the main topic, which isn't my intent.

The trails of grease left on my car has made the seals quiet again, so if your dealer refuses, there's always this option.

Definitely try a new dealer, that's crap that they won't do it. The creaking has not returned to my car, all is well.

I ordered some 3M-like tape and did the fix myself today. Creaking is gone!
