Heated Steering Wheel Activation

I have a 2014 435i M Sport Convert with heated steering wheel, my 13 328i has a message on the instrument cluster that told you Heated Steering wheel Activated or Deactivated when the button was pushed. My 435 doesn't say anything on dash when pushed and my dealer has no idea? Weird? And Ideas?

When my dealer did a factory electronic update abut 4 months ago during regular service, the feature of the dash info was added. It now gives the whole sentence about the heated steering wheel being activated and deactivated with the push of the steering column heating button.

Correct--I have had a couple of '15 loaners that have the indicator for the heated steering wheel in the IP. Those cars also have the time below the tach, and not in the center of the IP. I tried to get the dealer to update my software, and they claimed there is no update available. I have read that you can get them to update if you tell them the car has a rough restart when using the ASS; I'm going to give this a shot my next service.

Yes its like pulling teeth!!

I know the dealer service can be a PAIN!! It is so much nicer just to read the dash if the wheel heat is on rather trying to see the button light. I am going to try that as well next time its in for service.

On cold days, I don driving gloves--but that is about one day every five years. Do you all live in Alaska and park outside?

2015 328. Upon activation dash displays heated steering wheel activated lasts for 3 seconds. Upon turning off it advises it was turned off for 3 seconds.

No Alaska (IL), park inside, and still like and use the feature.

Just like the heated grips on BMW motorcycles - it makes a surprisingly big difference as to how cold you feel.

I LOVE the feature. Winters in New York regularly go single digit. Car is kept in a detached unheated garage. Even if I had a heated garage, everywhere I go does not .

Curious comment...I have gloves and no heated garage and have driven in sub zero Fahrenheit temperatures for 50 years with no steering wheel heater. This does not mean I have no appreciation for the steering wheel heater on our 435xi GC. It makes driving in cold weather more pleasant and less uncomfortable. Oops...my mistake, the comment doesn't apply to me as I am Canadian...

Something I have found interesting with regard to using the heated steering wheel. When I turn off the engine and then start the car again a short time later the steering wheel remains in the heat on mode. However, if I let the car sit for a longer period of time then it goes back to being off. Have not tried to time the interval. Does anyone know?

I'm sure people thought the same thing about air conditioning and power windows at one point. The thing I like best about the heated steering wheel is that you can turn it on for 2 minutes and take the chill off the wheel, in a situation where it's not really cold enough for gloves.

If the wheel and seat heat is on when the car is shut off and then the journey is continued within approximately 15 minutes, the steering wheel and seat heating is activated automatically with the temperature (for seats) selected last unless in ECO PRO mode then the seat heater output is reduced.

I get the full message and picture on my display and have come to like it until the cabin warms up. I got gloves and all that too but it has come to be a creature comfort that is just "nice". I really don't like wearing gloves inside the cabin anyway.

I see it as a safety feature. Gloves interfere with button pushing and knob twirling, and dealing with coins at tolls.

That is trash talk. Not everyone has a heated garage, Not everyone who has a heated garage has access to a heated garage at their destination. Restaurants, shopping malls etc.... no heated garage. Some people also have medical conditions that improve with heated steering wheels. Arthritis is one of them. Trolling?

It's bundled with the Cold Weather package, so if you get it anyway why not use it?

No--of course you should just pay to upgrade to a "heated garage" instead...
