These are the "before" photos I took last week. We've been very busy. I pulled down the wall paper in the "blue bedroom" and renamed it the paneled bedroom. I painted the lime green bedroom something other than lime green and did a few emergency repairs to the electrical system. Debbie has been working on the gardening, the floors and the kitchen.

But seriously, congrats!

Beautiful house! I would go find your ladder before you do any more cleaning, it looks like you have your own little rainforrest up in the gutters.

I wouldn't worry about the fusebox as long as it works - the one I yanked out of my house 2 years ago was 80 yrs old!

by the time you're finished you will be an expert -- document your work and write a book.

The facade and setting = heaven to me. You can do anything you like inside if you have the time, will power and cash. Enjoy!

+1 on the fuse box. Leave it alone if it works. It's "solid state". No moving parts. It's live.

There are six. There was one in the kitchen and one in a bedroom that have been covered up.

I'm going to have a chimney sweep out to check the flues on the two or three we might use occasionally.

One of the fuse holders is cracked. The holders are obsolete. Fortunately there simple kit to replace the fuse with a circuit breaker. I'm leaving the rest of the fuses alone.


The fuse is a calibrated wire held in by two screws.

hey just curious what ya do for a living. wales is not anything i'm familiar with. how much was that place with the view? just trying to compare to here in u.s.

I'm a technician for the research MRI machine at a University. My pay would be considered very low by US standards. Debbie is a Reader at the same university. Reader is position roughly in between an American Associate Professor and Full Professor. In the UK, the rank of Professor is reserved for the most senior highly accomplished academics. Her pay is higher than mine and in line with what she would make in the US.

We lost all our equity when we sold the Atlanta house in 2008.

The house has never been sold since it was built around 1870. It is hard to put a price on it. I'd say somewhere around or above £500,000 mostly because of the land it is on. £750,000 will get you a nicer house. £300,000 will get you a decent 4 bedroom house in a village.


Our rent is £550 per month for the next two years with the understanding that the rent goes to £800 per month in August 2014. In exchange for low rent we are taking the house as-is and doing some interior repairs and renovation. The landlord has agreed to do exterior repairs to the roof, fascia and windows.

In the UK, tenants are responsible for property tax. On this house it is about £1000 per year.
