Does anybody have experience on upgrading day of flight with Lufthansa

Global Premier Upgrades may also be used on Lufthansa-operated flights, on a day-of-departure basis. Members should call the MileagePlus Service Center at least two weeks in advance of their Lufthansa flight to request a printed certificate, which will be mailed to the member. The certificate must be presented to a Lufthansa representative at check-in. Each certificate is valid for a one-way, one-segment upgrade on any multi-cabin international flight operated by Lufthansa. Upgrades are subject to availability.

Fare class eligibility is determined by the operating carrier. The following Lufthansa fares are not eligible for Global Premier Upgrades: Z, P, W, S, T, L, K, R, E, X, I, O, ID, AD and IP.

Lufthansa's policy on paid upgrades is that the cost is the difference in fare. I don't think they have some of the lower cost paid upgrade schemes that the US airlines have.

Yep, did exactly this just last week; FRA to LAX

I was in Business for my ED on LH and asked about the possibility to upgrade to F. They had plenty of seats but would only let me upgrade with miles (at the time) if I had miles with LH, SQ, or a few others. I was in Charlotte and had a slew of US miles but at the time, they did not have the current Star Alliance upgrade award scheme so it was not possible. I asked about paying with cash and they quoted some ridiculous number (several thousand $$) and for arriving the same time and for (as I found out later) the exact same meals, there was no justification whatsoever.
