What were they looking for in the C&D comparo?

I think trucktrend did one, and their comparo was for the best luxury diesel for the offroad. That one the touareg was last, the ml350 3rd, the cayenne 2nd (which was the most fuel efficient) and the GC 1st.

It boils down to whats the purpose of the comparo. Im guessing its not offroading, since the latest generation Touareg has been neutered compared to its predecessor offroad wise. Im also guessing its not fuel efficiency as most reviewers seem to be getting better fuel efficiency out of the Cayenne yet their power-train is so similar.

"But this diesel never lets you forget it's a diesel. It has the clatter soundtrack turned up loud and makes vibrations to match. Compared with the whisper-quiet ML, this truck sings two-part harmony with a Greyhound bus."

This says it all, the exact reason why I went twice with the 35i.

Hmmm. A slight clatter is not a reason to avoid the diesel IMO, but that's why we all have our own opinions. I personally think the slight hint of diesel noise is kind of endearing -- not to mention the 400+ lbs of torque and close to 30mpg on the highway to boot.

Yeah I read this in the mag, no adaptive drive for some reason but it had just about every other option. Still did well when you look at the performance aspects compared to the others.

The X5 was setup to lose at the beginning, and it's even evident between points given and opinions, how they don't match.

For instance, X5's steering and handling was rated 7, same as ML..
Yet, here are the comments about each steering:
ML: "well-weighted but generally lifeless and uncommunicative", "Slightly sluggish steering"
X5: "Cool consumer of straight and twisting miles", yet "if the X5 were the class handler, but the steering proved overly heavy in parking lots and fully matched by others at higher speeds"

Most of all, this summarizes why TDI was chosen. Note, nothing particular to say about it's highs: "Highs: Does it all and does it well, all the seats are winners, friendly controls".

"Fun to Drive" section cracked me up. GC scored higher than 35d!

I think the BMW screwed it up. Don't publisher usually get their reviews from manufacturer? Seriously, no adaptive drive and you go with shoot out against Porsche? I guess they want to make F15 looks really good when it comes out.

I thought the line about the X5d's engine noise was particularly stupid. I've driven a few diesels in my time and the sound of my X5's engine isn't obtrusive at all. I love it in fact and at speed on the highway (while it's returning 30+ mpg), it's nothing but a quiet, reassuring thrum in the distance.

Sub-7 seconds to 60 doesn't hurt either
