I'd say the opposite for BMW's 5-series, the 7-series has gotten better, and the 3-series has changed directions. But as a brand, they haven't clearly advanced since 2006 either.
All I'm saying is that it's no shock that what someone posted 10 years ago about what they drove is different than what they're posting now about what they drive. It's a fluid situation. Brands change, cars change, priorities change.

I was all set to get a 5 Series M-Sport as little as six months ago, but I drove the new 5 Series and couldn't believe how big it got and how much bigger it was than the 3 Series and that was a dealbreaker for me. My 3 is just my fun car, gets me out of the minivan when I take the kids to practice or myself to the rail station. A 5 Series is a large car, seems right for a family of 4 to use in lieu of an SUV, not a fun dad car for weekends.

Big picture though, my theories still are true: There aren't thousands of performance enthusiasts and those few that are out there shouldn't be in a $50,000 German luxury car to get their lightweight/powerful jollies. I'll stand behind that, always.

IMO, Cadillac has made a mistake in the garish styling of this generation of cars. That CTS-V coupe is a killer car by all reports, but what kind of person wants to arrive in such an over the top designed vehicle? Not very many people who currently drive BMWs or Mercedes, is my theory.

The ATS is clearly dialed back a bit from the CTS in that respect. I still don't think I could look at that damn grille every morning and take myself seriously though, no matter how good the car is.

That was me in 2008. Things change, no longer my priority to have silly battles over status in discussion forums. I'm in a different place now, very excited about my new car. We're just killing a few weeks here until we get our F30's and then the meaningful conversation can begin. The good news is that the E9X subforum was once a vibrant, thriving go-to place for 3 Series conversation before the car aged and the average buyer is getting a used hand-me-down for $15,000. This place is just starting to get good, going to be a fun four years.

Ah, sorry about that, you're right of course. You getting to Manhattan BMW to test drive an F30 this week? The weather looks right for it.

I need your advice for some spirited roads to travel in the northern NYC/NJ area as my car will be here (God willing) next week and I'd like to put it through it's paces. You once mentioned a road up to West Point Academy. You have others?

That is an absolutely accurate observation. I never read the E60 forums any more...the conversation has simply changed over there, and now it's about tuning and bitching about how "the eight year old car I just bought, that had four owners before me, has a couple of problems that need fixing...BMW is so unreliable."

These days, I'm starting to enjoy the speculative posts on Bimmerpost about models that BMW may or may not release in 2015 a lot more.

The last thing I want you to think is I am BJ, although I never needed your support in this regard, still thanks for the effort.

The worst thing can happen is leave your girl for another woman, only to get bored again and try to sneak back into your ex's house ask for BJ. Then realize your ex is looking hotter and she is taken, sorry.

I don't think you will be able to order the LSD without MRC initially but the configurations will likely change after few months. I would like to have the LSD without MRC with staggered tire setup, V6 and 6 speed (I know that configuration is not available).

So I assume most of you have already done this, but I finally broke down and went and built one of these ATSs on Caddy's website. I tried to build something which was about as close to the 328i I have on order. The total came to $44,190 vs the $46,775 MSRP of my car. Some features are not equal between the cars, but everything gained vs lost seemed reasonable. Both had some things the other didn't, but no deal breakers.

I was shocked at how close the costs are. I started with the Turbo Performance 2.0, added 18 inch wheels, and cold weather and that was it. Maybe there will be some major rebates on the ATS, but I guess I was expecting a much larger difference in price. Perhaps my perception is just screwy because I have made my bed so to speak, but I was expecting a greater value proposition than what I saw from the Caddy. Sort of like Infiniti/Acura... stuff the car with tech to get it out and seen on the road at a lower price point.

Cadillac will likely throw a bunch of incentives on ATS, and offer very low lease rates, like they do now for the CTS, but it may take a while for the deals to happen.

One can lease a CTS for quite a bit less than an F30 now, it will be hard to explain an ATS should lease for more than a CTS. Having said that, ATS is all new, not just a new model facelift. Every thing in it is the latest, not carried over from the past, I can understand why they need to keep the price up to recoupe the R&D.

Ah, no. None of us would waste our time configuring a car we'll never buy. Even if we each won one on Jeopardy we wouldn't take it, would insist on something more useful like 500 pounds of manure.

What? Spirited drive? Are you planning on pulling out the Rolex to get a time on the zero to 25?

Resistance is futile, isn't it?

Or maybe BJ's Rolex is getting old, he needs his F30 to do a 0-60 at a BMW published 5.7 seconds to calibrate his watch from time to time.

I bet the earlier of course.

Don't you go crazy now BJ. Remember give the common folk time to see that BMW 328i badge and they can't do that if you cross the magical 30 mph self impose limit.

Consider how quickly BJ has evolved just in the past few days, it should not surprise us three years from now he may arrive in this:

Only if this series has a lower model. BJ doesn't go for top models in the series, its all about having enough power to carry the badge. Now the hood is long enough on this car where he will need to buy a few more Rolex, just the 4 will get lost in such a long hood.

I've decided to give performance enthusiasm one last try in the new car, going to take a 10 MPH curve at 12 MPH, see what pushing the envelope feels like. Can someone teach me how to heel-and-toe in an automatic so I'm prepared for the g-forces? If the valve stem caps pop, will BMW's warranty cover them?

Yes, if you order the manual it comes with LSD, before you add MRC.

You know the cost difference, with LSD, but with or without MRC?

The nice thing with F30 you can add the $1k dynamic handling pack (?) to the base no line, and get the m sport suspension.
