When I got my first one of many it was unique, everyone I knew made fun of its size and people thought I was somehow involved with Panera Bread Company. I loved it, now...they're like 3-series BMW - everyone's got one.

My point exactly, BJ should know, Panerai to 328, is Rolex to Cadillac.

So which model was it? You have a long internet history and prior to having your 328 e92 vert, you were all over the Acura boards boasting about your TL. I hope you don't mean that your TL was better?

A quote by BJ on Acurazine:

TL vs. BMW 3 Covertible

"Anyone know if you can fit 3 passengers in the back seat of a 3 convertible? In looking at photos, it looks like you can only fit 2....just wondering if there are Latch connectors and/or a hidden lap belt in case I'd need to get 3 kids back there.

No, not thinking of getting rid of the TL.....just looking for a fun 3rd car.

BJ"

"Thanks guys. Yeah, looking specifically for a used luxury-level convertible. 3 kids in the back (7, 4, 1 years old) in boosters and installed car seat. If the 3 isn't going to work for me (that sucks) any suggestions?

BJ"

I was different back then. Either way you slice it, the F30 is the greatest BMW ever made and I'm both privileged and grateful to be able to own one.

No, I still think you are the same then and now. The difference is that your ride has changed but your character has not. Apparently, you yourself believe that Mr. and Mrs. America perceive that Acura is a luxury car, yet now you won't even talk to Mr. and Mrs. Acura.

So I guess you broke down with your shallowness & low self esteem and listened to your friends.

Quote:
Stay on point Mr. Walsh:

This is not and never has been about *my* reason for buying a TL.

This debate is whether or not Mr and Mrs America think Acura is a luxury brand. Guess what......they do.

Truth be told, if I'm so shallow and full of low self esteem, I'd have listened to my friends and bought a BMW or a Mercedes. I can afford those. Chose not to. I'm on your side of the argument when it comes to personal preference. Again, that's not what this particular thread is about......it's about whether Acura is perceived as a luxury brand, not an assault on egotism.

Yeah, when I wasn't making a lot of money I bought an Acura and tried to convince myself that it was a luxury car.

I was wrong. Just like you.

It's entertaining reading those old acurazine BJ posts. You claimed to have made a lot back then. 3rd car, rolex's, etc. You already had your kids to your current wife, unless they were from another mother. You could have afford a BMW or Merc, but you chose not to. Doesn't sound like a less wealthy BJ. Different car same story.

I'm not like you, I went from a $53k e92 335 BMW to a $60k Audi S4 and the brand never affected my decision. Remember, you're trying to impress Mr. and Mrs. Camry, not Mr. Audi. We're not impressed by your $400/month lease.

Just showing what even the general public thinks is a prestigious brand - you contended BMW has some kind of brand cache. BMW is not listed in the searches I've done. May be listed somewhere.

As for the demographics you're listing, I'm not following. Are you saying these educated successful people act like owning a BMW is impressive? Or that it's a shrug, the same as owning a Toyota or Kia. Money's on the fact it's a shrug. They may rib you based on the 1980's stereotypes about yuppies but at this point, even with its small market share, BMW's just another option. Mini's got an even smaller owner base and it's not like that gets any attention.

Regardless, I'm dismayed when I see people in a BMW forum acting like they drive something coveted by others. Just doesn't seem to be the case given that the average car sale price is over 29k and a 3 series rings in usually around 40k.

BJ, I've located your most die-hard worshiper. It may be a good thing that you tend to hibernate in between model changes or leases.

p/s post a photo of your new ride when you receive it.

Panerai is not a serious watch for someone who is really into watches. It's just jewelry with an ETA mass produced movement (save for a few today that they claim are "in-house" produced movements.) They have only been "re-born" for about 10-15 years. Panerai is all about the art of marketing.

Rolex is still the standard great everyday watch as it takes a licking and keeps on ticking (slogan coined by Timex).

Patek Philippe is the Rolls Royce of watches.

Re-sale markets and auctions tell the story, as well as a long and storied tradition for both Rolex and PP.

When I started adding them to my collection they were quarky and unique.
By the way Rolex is even more overplayed I never wear my Seadweller because it's too small and only occasionally wear my DSSD.

If your point is that you don't like me and that several years ago I had a posting style that you didn't like, sorry about that.

Being honest, I don't think that an Audi is a luxury car, apparently you don't care, and I don't know what your purpose is in this thread.

As for performance, the loaded 42k G37 Sport, that's 6 years old, will stand toe to toe with the 335i. For comparable equipment that 335i's gonna have to be pushed up well above 50k.
Which should tell you something that the 3 series spanks the Infiniti in sales. Its' like the Altima, nobody really cares if it performs better on paper, it doesn't make people feel special to own it.

Seems to me the G is just getting fatter and softer like the 3 series, I don't see how it's closing the gap at all. Did you buy a G? No. So you're no different than most people - they look at the G and say "Oh good, value, nice 0-60 numbers, but . . . meh".

I was in a Tourneau store today talking about watches. Apparently the Panerai watch sales have cooled off considerably. The person I was speaking with is also not a fan.

All watches have become way overpriced in the last 10 years. But, the stainless Rolexes are still a bargain for what you get as compared to most of the other "high end" brands.

They were also very good investments. I bought my first, a GMT Master in gold/SS in 1979 for $1,925 and sold it last year for $4,700. Same thing for a watch I had bought for my father which I sold after he passed away two years ago.

My best watch investment is a Patek. It's tripled in retail price over what I paid for it new in 2001. Try doing that with a modern BMW.

There are a few posters here who only think in a straight line, can't go around the corner, that include the Audi and the 335d guys. Please don't be one of them.

Because if you can't turn turn the corner, you end up like them, go to the other extreme, dig up someone else's history all the way back 20 years ago, or become a conspiracy theory minded.

Not knowing life is often simpler and a bitch most times.

+1 not that we have BJ's many-figured income, but I can afford way more car now compared to when I bought the E46 7 years ago, yet now the portion I'm willing to spend on cars has shrunk quite a bit.

Or could just be low testerone . . .
