Z4 What happened to my mirror?

I was driving today still in the darkness and I heard a strange noise. When I arrived... I saw this:

It seems the mirror... lost its glass? What is the best way to fix this? I just buy a new mirror or I need something "more"?

I had the same issue years ago with my passenger side mirror, and would suggest that as long as the motors still can tilt the inner frame, just make a template (might need to copy from a friend's car) and go to a local custom glass/mirror shop and have one cut to your template. The new mirror can be RTV'ed in place.

No, I do not think I have auto-dimming mirrors. In fact, I did not even know such an option existed

Happened to my 2004 about four years into ownership (moved from Boston to Orlando) - driver side. My indy BMW shop told me the backing sealant stressed from the heated mirrors coupled with hot Florida sun and it just fell off. Had a glass shop make a replacement and much cheaper than stealer OE parts.

BMW glass from the dealer is:

Left - 51167112585 $104.38 from Tischer: $84.00
Right - 51167112588 $126.60 from Tischer: $102.00

Why would you not use original OEM glass.

Most of those use doublesided tape.

Hi! Yes they do, or one can use some kind of high-strength silicone or epoxy or similar that everybody has in the garage. What does the OEM do to cost 5x?

I just replaced both heated, auto-dim side mirrors with the Burco RediCuts and saved a ton(less than $20 ea). They look just fine and I'll never have to worry about the stuff in the auto-dim mirrors leaking onto the paint. Yeah i know it's not OE but frankly I'm more than satisfied with this alternative. You can also buy the add-on Heat Grid sticker if you want to make the redi cuts heated for $22 per sticker.

...now, you need to remove the bad mirror(or in this case the left over plastic) from the mirror holder/plate. then prep that surface so you can attach the new mirror with either the double sided stick on rounds they send you or silicone. it is a little bit of work but in my opinion well worth the savings.

I agree it seems very minor work. Apparently they have two sizes, I'll need to measure. Also, it's interesting the passenger side mirror costs 25% more than the driver's, I wonder why...
