Manual or automatic?
How many miles on it?
Has the fluid been changed before?
What is the model of the transmission?

+1 is it a 5HP-24, or a 5HP-30?

5HP30 (AS5 560Z) requires Shell LA2634. BMW states use of other oil will cause failure, however, some have used Amsoil ATF, Penzoil, Valvoline MAXLIFE with success.

The transmission is automatic. 200004 miles. The fluid was supposed to be changed years ago. I will need to locate the transmission model. I do not know it.

Not really.

Redline D4ATF x 4
Redline 75w-90 x 2
Automatic transmission filter kit

That's it.

I would not change the fluid if it was supposed to be changed many years ago, unless you absolutely know it was changed on a regular basis (i.e. every 40-60k miles). I would instead save your money for a nice rebuilt unit.
Changing the fluid after even 100k miles for the first time is an invitation for tranny failure.

A quick example: I sold a few parts to a guy who bought an e34 cheap, to flip. He changed the tranny fluid and suddenly the tranny did not work at all. The old fluid was actually a "part" of the transmission, and helped it work.

If this happens the trans was at death's door anyway.
Friction material circulating in the oil that may be providing grip to worn clutches is also wearing bearing and seal surfaces at an exponential rate.
Don't change the oil and it will die, change the oil and maybe it will die.

^^ Fixed

Auto trannies have a limited lifespan. At 200k, the tranny (original I am assuming) is on its way out regardless of whether or not you change the oil. I think we need to find out from the OP why exactly he is changing his oil in the first place: strange sounds, slipping, maintenance item, just for the heck of it?

I'm also looking to change my ATF, for maintenance reasons. It's got 97K miles on it and I want to use Redline specs stated above. The tranny seems fine to me, but I don't know what it felt like new. I agree with ross1. It's better to change it than not. I've read that you should change it, drive it for 15K miles, then change it again to get all of the old stuff out. Makes sense to me.
