Driving without a front license plate?

For cars that come without a front license plate, do you guys just drive it like that until you're forced to screw one on by the cops? I was pulled over a few years ago for speeding and the cop let me go with a warning but gave me a $10 fix-it ticket. Had to go screw on a front plate on the bumper and show it to the local police station to get the OK.

Really don't want to screw on a front plate and ruin the look of the bumper if I don't have to.

They have a retractable plate frame that works really well with the M SPort bumper. Also seen guys wire tie it to the mesh in the bottom mouth. Doesn't look that bad actually.

Move to a state that doesn't require a front plate. :-).

Seriously, if you get busted for not having the front plate, I'd have no sympathy.

Getting busted is not the concern here, I can handle a $10 fix-it ticket and a drive to the police station to prove I've added a plate. I just didn't want to drill holes in the bumper if there's other options

For reference, those would be the blue states in the map below:

Special scenarios:
  • Massachusetts: If you have a valid green on white license plate, it was issued singularly so no front plate is required.
  • Nevada: Front plates are optional only if 1) the vehicle was not designed for a front plate and 2) the manufacturer did not provide an add-on bracket or other means of displaying the front plate. The second plate must still be kept in the vehicle in either case.

I ordered a U.S. Millworks tow hook front license plate bracket for this very reason.

Nice. So the tow hook plate has to be on the side of the bumper like that as opposed to centered?

I will be putting one of the retractable tracks on our 435Xi once it arrives. My wife won't drive without one and I don't want one so it works for both of us.

The tow hook mount is nice for the next owner but very ugly for you.

If you live in a red state, do not move to a blue state or you will have an empty front plate bracket, which looks worse that a front plate. A front plate doesn't look so bad but the front to many BMWs seem optimized to most European sized plates.

The best plates, in my opinion, are BC, WA, MD, DE, and VT.

I think that's the one I'm going for too. It's nice that u can hide it when u want. Where are you buying from and is the installation DIY or can dealer install?

Mounting a North American front license plate to a BMW F3x makes the car uglier no matter what. So any mounting solution that precludes having to drill holes in the bumper is very desirable indeed.

I see Alberta, Canada cars all the time with NO licence plates up front and they look naked, downright odd with that empty space. The cops still nail them for speeding, plate or not as they like to drive fast in Vancouver which has a lot more cops on duty!! I think a nicely framed licence plate up front isnt ugly--just an expected part of the front end decor, really. Drilling holes up front is unattractive. Maybe NO plates would be better!!

No I don't think any of the 4 series I've seen come with them.

According to my SA, Maryland no longer requires a front tag on cars on which there is no attached frame.

Your SA is not correct. There was a bill (HB 577) proposed in last year's Maryland General Assembly incorporating provisions similar to Nevada's (refer to post #7), but Bimmerfest member danderer correctly recognized that the bill never passed and is not currently part of Maryland's motor vehicle code. See this thread.

My buddy is putting on his retractable plate on his 428 M sport this weekend. I will tell him to post pictures after he is done so you can see what it looks like on a 4 series.

No, I think he's right. Effective October 1, 2013.

The bill did not make it out of committee: Legiscan page on HB577 2013. October 1 is simply the date any chaptered bill that's passed during a regular session of Maryland's General Assembly becomes effective. HB577 did not pass.

If your SA is willing to pay others' violations related to this, I'll take him/her up on it.
