Tracking your 7series

I took my car to a BMW driver school last weekend. Lots of 3 series, a few porsches and corvettes. I highly recommend this for 7 series owners. I have the 4 wheel steering, the active roll stabilization, and the sport package. This car can do a lot more than you ever thought it could. I could catch any 3 series through the turns, and some of the Porsches and corvettes, the only thing that could run me down was the later model M3 and a corvette Z06. It left all the other people flat footed. several other instructors came up to me in between track events and commented on how flat my car was in all the turns. I have a great pic of me running down a 330i with the ZHP Package on a 60mph curve, it clearly shows the 330i leaning more than my 750Li!! I pushed my 7 harder than i had ever dreamed it could be pushed, and it responded. I did get a warning from the computer about brake temps getting too high, and after 8 track episodes it turned out that i had slightly warped my rotor. but that included unbelievable number of hauling down from 125mph plus!

I agree, the F01/F02 ARS, Integral Active steering, dynamic damper systems are exceptional.

Isn't the 7 series one of the least satisfying cars to track in the BMW range? Due to its size and weight? I would expect it would be the slowest and least satisfying car apart from the X's? All the 1, 3, 5, 6, Z, M cars would be more nimble and responsive through the turns, if least fast down the straights.

... not according to wjhughes420384, he had a great time at a BMW Driver School Event, experienced the F02 like few have. I would have played along too, memorable BMW event for wjhughes420384 et-al.

I think it's more a testament to his driving ability than the car itself. Meaning, if he were in a Porsche or Corvette, he may have been faster. Also sometimes it's not just about how fast the car is, but how it drives. You can likely make a truck motor around a track, but how satisfying would it be over a light and nimble lower powered sports car?

If the 7 series was such a good track car, why would people be driving Porsches around a track?

Well, it's about driving pleasure and self satisfaction. He had a good time and that's all it matters. I drove my friend's m3, m5, and even 328 convertible, they all feel much more involved than my 7, feels more like a glove and more willingly to be toss around, the 7 just feel too heavy and large compare to those.

When I pulled up to the Tech inspection, the guys asked me what in the hell i thought i was doing there!

They all at one point or another came up to me and commented on how unbelievably well this car does in the turns. I know this is far from the ideal track car, but it is still a blast to toss this car around the track! The suspension on this car allows you to do a lot more than you think.

Obviously i would think a pro in 3 series could run me down, but others with similar skills to mine could not. the ARS flat out rocks! Sure You would never pick this as a track car, its way too much money, take this much money and soup up a 3 series and you would have a better track car.
I can only invite you to try this out. I think you will be surprised.
I am going back in sept to a much more technical track. It should be tougher for me to keep up.

here are a few pics from the track, note where i am running down the red 330i, look at the roof lines. the 330 is rolling more than my 7!

Do you have 4 wheel steer? Any opinions on that?

yes i have the 4 wheel steering, not sure how much that helped, I think the ARS was the biggest difference
