Transmission fluid: To Change or Not to Change?

I have a 2006 E65 with close to 100k miles. I'm doing all the right things to service the car (oil, filters, brakes, coolant flush, fixing some leaks, etc.). One project I planned to do is to change out my transmission fluid.

I purchased the pan and the bolts and I was planning to get the fluid from the dealer, which was very expensive -- about $300 for the 10 liters necessary.

I've started to debate in my mind is this is truly a necessary task, since BMW says it's "lifetime". What's the prevailing opinion here?

Thanks forum. This place has save me many $$!

I would change it. BMW states "it's lifetime fluid" but when the transmission fails then you have reached the lifetime. A few hundred bucks spent now is better than many thousands spent down the road when the transmission fails.

Also I believe after the E38 BMW changed there stand from lifetime to every 100k. I would change it also, I did mine at 60k when my sleeve was leaking and my oil was dirty. As for the fluid I did not need more that six quarts and I got my fluid from here http://www.thectsc.com/ fluid is called lifeguard 6

If it is an 06 wouldn't it be a E66? I wouldn't do it unless your car has a few problems. If its running like a champ I wouldn't change a thing about it!

The production year is not exactly related to E65 or E66.

E65 is the shorter version of the 7s: 745i or 750i
E66 is the longer wheel base of the 7s: 745Li or 750Li

To the OP: A few members here actually sent the old extracted oil sample for analysis, the results contradicted with "lifetime" specified by BMW. Guys at Bavarian autosport recommended to change transmission oil every 50K miles. See the attached PDF.

Lifetime oil means the life of the oil not the transmission. Change it. $300 for oil is a truck load less than a new transmission!!!
