How do you keep your carpets clean?

All season floor mats may provide enough protection from usual salt and sand (even minor slush or rain). But what about those really bad days? In my 335, I had placed some "rag rug" style rugs below the rubber mats () and that provided great protection for areas around the edges of the rubber. It helped keep the salt, sand, and mud out of the factory floor carpets. However, this time, I am looking for something a little more refined.

Wondering if anyone places something between the rubber and carpet and what ideas are out there to keep the carpets pristine. (Ordered mojave interior, I assume that means black carpets?)

I'm a big fan of Weather Tech mats. I drive an Audi with beige interior and I have had amazing luck with the not so far. I will be ordering Weather Tech mats for my X3 once I get it at the end of the month. My job has me in and out of my car all day long regardless of the weather if anyone was going to run into a problem it would be me.
