locking car with fob in the car

Hello everyone,
Today I had a towing hitch installed. Unfortunately, the shop ( hitch company)closed before I finish work; so i told the shop to open the passenger door, lock the car with the fob, place the fob in the glove compartment, and then close the door. When they closed the door, all doors unlocked. I was going to pickup the car later in the night with the second fob. BMW says it is a safety feature which eliminates any chance of locking your car with the fob inside. Does anyone know how to override this? Thanks.

The wife put her purse in the trunk with the FOB and the lid automatically reopened. I had to try twice with the auto trunk before it locked. BMW conveniently offers this fail safe feature to prevent you from locking your FOB in the vehicle.

Yeah I think they've programmed it so that you can only do it if it's in the hatch but you have to try hard, like mentioned above. My 2011 335i with Comfort Access allowed me to lock a FOB in the car but I haven't tried on my X3. But I do remember reading somewhere that you can, in fact, lock it in the hatch.

Lock Key in Car?

I understand that if you pull the steel key out of the FOB you can manually lock the FOB in the car, the salesman claimed this was suitable for going for a Swim. You dont want to take the FOB with you when swimming!

Hello again,

Yes it does work but you must have the power hatch option.
With the hatch open, if I used the fob to lock the doors, and then push the close button on the hatch, the doors will unlock and the hatch will open again. But, if i push the "lock" button on the hatch, all doors will lock and the hatch will be closed and locked too.
