How rare are manual transmission 3 Series

I'm in the market for a new car. My current daily driver is a '07 Subaru WRX with a 5-Speed manual transmission. I also own a '03 Honda S2000 which has a 6-Speed manual transmission. My next car will have a manual transmission. I went to a local BMW dealership to look over the 3 Series. The sales rep asked if I wanted to drive one and I said that I'd like to drive one with a manual transmission. He said that they don't have any and don't put them on the lot because they won't sell. He went on to say that the few people who do want manual transmissions order their cars to get everything just the way they want it. I certainly wouldn't expect a dealership to put a car on their lot that they think won't sell fast enough. However, I'm really hesitant to order a car without trying one first. I did drive a Coupe with an automatic, but that obviously doesn't tell me how the manual will feel. How rare are the MT's? Once the sales rep figured out that I won't buy one with an automatic, I got the feeling that he became disinterested. He said that he'd call me if they get one it, but I'm not holding my breath because he seemed pretty convinced that they won't be getting one in. Any suggestions on how to test drive what doesn't seem to exist?

i had to order mine sight unseen, same as with my 07 e90. you'll have to call around... tbh, i think its pretty unlikely that you'll find one, most dealers are MT special order only.

My dealer had one as a loaner for me to drive which was cool. But most will have to order you one, but call around to drive one first.

Your s2000 is still kind of the manual transmission benchmark, do not judge the 3 series too harshly lol.

The coupe you drove was the last generation as the sedan is on next platform. If you want a coupe It will be a few more months before that arrives as the 4 series.

How rare are they?

I have been in the market for about three months and, like you, will only buy a MT. I live in Southern California where there are probably 2000+ 3-series in local dealerships. In those three months, looking around and calling around regularly, I found ONE 2013 manual transmission 328.

I went to the dealership to test drive it on Saturday. I told the CA four times that was all I wanted and to tell me if it wasn't there anymore because I know they are so rare. When I got there, the CA made me wait 30 minutes before telling me it had just sold on a dealer trade.

My backups have been driving CPO/used MTs and new automatics. I think I'm just going to have to order, as your dealer suggested.

Personally I think this is ridiculous. BMW should encourage each larger dealer to keep a MT on the lot. But it is what it is.

My dealer in PA has three 328i(s) with manual transmissions out of 60 - 3 series in stock.

My local dealer in SE FL has two 328i(s) with manual transmissions out of 25 - 3 series in stock. They also have two 2013 E93 convertibles in stock with manual transmissions.

They are around.

They're about as rare as 335's without ~$15k worth of extra options. Basically nonexistent.

I agree that every dealership should strive to have some variety, but it just doesn't happen.

When I was just about to place my F30 order, I had one last thing to test....DHP. First dealership didn't have a single 3 series with it. Not even on any 328's. The second dealership had one single 335 with DHP....thankfully. And that's one of the most popular options, at least judging from these forums. MT is far less popular...so I guess it makes sense why we never see them at all.

You can use sites such as cars.com to search local inventories. I am in the same market - the Los Angeles area- and the percentage of manuals is indeed extremely low. To make matters worse, some dealerships pass their car info as being manuals, but with the auto transmission option One such stupid dealership is BMW of Riverside. But it seems like Rusnak (Pasadena and Westlake) has quite a few manuals on their lots (at least their own website confirms the transmission, but perhaps you should double check by calling).

I found myself in your situation in December. At the time there were NINE MT 335is in the United States; the closest to me was Seattle. I used CARS.COM to search - today it shows 99 2013 335/328 models in the US with MT. But I kept looking for 2012 or 2013 USED cars with MT and a used 2012 with MT showed up in North Scottsdale (2 hours from me). I hopped in the car and test drove it the next day. I was sold. I was prepared to fly to somewhere like Dallas or Atlanta to test drive one. Not having any BMW experience to benchmark on, I found it important to do so.

I look inside of a lot of the 3 Series that I see parked and a fair number of them have MTs.

From here on in just for the hell of it I'll keep count.

In a parking garage in downtown manhattan where I regularly park if I drive in to work there are at least seven regulars with MT's including myself - two m-sports F30 and three E90's all 335's and two E9x M3's.
I believe all of them are custom orders - mine is. I got sight unseen, hadn't driven a BMW in more than 15 years before I got my car.

I think its funny that this issue keeps coming up and the EXACT same reason pops up... that dealerships claim they can't sell a MT transmission car. Yet, NONE are found. It probably takes twice/three times a long to sell a MT vs automagic so that may be a reason they are reluctant to keep them on a lot, especially if it sits from one model year to the next.

I went through this two years ago when I was shopping. I only found one E90 with a 6MT amongst the 3 dealers in my area.

I would suggest you try to find a used/cpo E9X which will be the closest comparison especially if you are in the market for a 335i as it will basically be the exact same powertrain.
The test drive the auto F30 to get a feel of the overall driving dynamics.

IMHO BMW makes pretty decent manuals which can be made pretty great with CDV delete and the M-sport shifter.

Thank you everyone for the quick feedback. Oddly enough, I feed a little better knowing I'm not the only one who has experienced this.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm about 35mins from Global Imports. I'll give them a call to arrange a test drive.

Would you please elaborate on the "CDV delete" and the "M-sport shifter"? I'm guessing that the "M-sport shifter" is something like the short throw shifter that I had installed on my WRX, but I don't want to make any assumptions.

I find that when they do have one, it was usually an accident when ordering a car that was supposed to have an AT.

My dealer had a manual 535 that sat around for months because of an ordering mistake.

CDV refers to the Clutch Delay Valve. This is designed to protect the transmission from morons who can't drive a manual properly. Most find it annoying. Many have it removed to make the clutch smoother and shorter.

The M-sport shifter is exactly what you think it is.

Interesting....when I bought my first 3-Series in 2000, my dealer told me that at least 80% of the cars the dealership sold were manual transmission cars. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and asked him what the percentages are now. He said over 90% are automatics. He also felt that many buyers are buying the badge and not the car..... Is BMW turning into Honda and Toyota and selling Mom & Pop cars?

I seriously doubt what he told you in 2000. Unless his clientele were strictly enthusiasts. Do a search for 2000 BMW 3 series for sale and you will see.

I think people have been buying BMW's for the badge for a very long time.

In 2000 I would have not considered an AT they have improved so much in the last few years that I have no regrets about ordering my 335i with a Steptronic.

This is something that has to be confirmed.

Many dealers are mis-labeling the transmissions on the web. It's very annoying.

Absolutely. They are not even hiding it in Europe - actually they are proud how many Ford Mondeo (Fusion here) sales they have stolen last year. Here they don't flaunt it that much probably because American customer is much more brand value conscious when cars are concerned than Europeans.

This of course, as far as 3-series is concerned. It is the same with 1 series but we don't get those here.

It also does not help that the 8spd auto is pretty dang good. No real MPG penalty, no real acceleration penalty. In the old days, some cars would be a second slower to 60 with the 4spd automatics lol.
