Parking warning signals

Warning signals that sound when approaching an object work well when backing up but I have noticed there is also a warning sensor positioned on the front of the vehicle but it does not sound, for instance, when pulling into a parking place where an unseen object may be in front of the vehicle.

The odd thing is that when I start the engine to leave the parking space the warning sound telling me there is an object in front of me does sound but this is kind of late since I am now going to back out of the space.

Shouldn't I be warned when I am parking when the warning would have some meaning, "hey, you are about to hit something, be careful".

Am I missing something here? Is there some way to enable the warning sound so it actually warns me that I am approaching something?

Regards,
ERK

You have to turn the parking sensors on by hitting the button on the lower left of the center console. This also turns on the top view camera (if you have it). When you are in reverse the sensors are automatically activated.

ironfan,

Thanks! I guess that's why BMW includes an owner's manual for questions like mine. I just always assumed this would be an automatic feature similar to the warnings provided in reverse.

You're welcome.

As for it being automatic when driving forwards you would have to think of a trigger, such as slow speed, but there are many times when you don't need the warning at slow speed driving. So I think making this manually activated is the only reasonable option.
