I like my style 71s. 18" staggered. Going to be refinishing them this winter and adding a bit of color.

Srry u have a 530i I read it to fast--wrong hub size--u would need hub rings to take up the space

Hi Jpenn05.
Are you 100% sure you wish to go to 20's? if so, please do keep in mind you'll need to *REALLY* buckle down and research hard as running 20's on an E39 isn't a case of choosing wheels and throwing them on! You'll need to choose the right kind of wheel design that lends itself to the E39 shape and styling well, I'd HIGHLY recommend going with some high end and strong wheels as the tyre profiles you'll need to run are very small - get this wrong and weaker wheels are much more likely to crack. In order to visually look right along with the style/design of the wheel, you also need to significantly lower the car, most likely using coilovers. Here's an example of how to get running 20's on an E39, correct! ![]() ![]() ![]() Notice how the deep lip lends itself to making the wheel size 'blend' into the aesthetics of the car very well, it's bit of a visual trick there. There's examples of other wheels with no lip or much less of one and the wheel 'looks' bigger and doesn't flow with the shape of the car. The offsets of the wheels have been very carefully chosen and it's running slightly less wide tyres for a minimal stretched look in order to fit under the arches without fouling. That's where the suspension considerations come in. Get these bits wrong, and you'll likely rub and catch the tyres etc when driving. There's no 'best wheel' for the E39, you'll get every answer and suggestion under the sun! some people prefer oem, others prefer much rarer and exclusive ones. To help you choose what you like here's the link I always provide http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...et-wheels.html Lots of wheel choices there and pictured on actual cars, book the evening off, it's currently 157 pages ! 19 inch is a popular choice as well and you don't have to be quite so aggressive with the lowering amounts to pull the look off well as a result. Cheers, Dennis! |

Understand that aside from giving up ride quality, you will sacrifice acceleration and gas mileage when going to 20" rims.

Look up rotational mass and how reducing the weight and keeping a decent diameter (16-18") on wheels is one of the single best, instant-feel performance "mods" you can do for ANY car. OP, If you care about performance, you know that stuffing 20's under an E39 will leave you with little room for tires with a decent sidewall. If straight line acceleration and standing launches are in your plans, then you want more sidewall so it will flex. Softer sidewalls will act as additional springs functioning in series with your rear chassis mounted coil springs and will soften the overall spring rate in the rear. This then aids in weight transfer to the rear adding to mechanical grip and therefore more rear traction and a more comfy ride.
