Tips for selling?

I'm looking to sell an '07 328xi and I'm having trouble. There is only 55k on it. Any tips? We're looking to get maximum for it, so we have it listed at $17k. Edmonds had it valued at like $17,666 or something like that.

Detail the heck out of it and keep it as clean as possible while it's being shopped. Compile all service records to show the buyer Fresh brakes or at least 10K miles left on the pads will help. And the transmission service will help too...if it's been done, show the prospective buyer. Have you taken it to CARMAX? You may want to get a feel for the wholesale value and consider if the difference is worth the time and effort. Good luck.

Where is it listed? AutoTrader?

Edmunds can be misleading ..... what are other like cars priced at for similar miles / condition?

OK here goes:
  • Keep it clean
  • Keep it stock
  • Be price flexible
  • Be cooperatively friendly
  • Let 'em sell themselves

Offer any pretty lady who calls about the car a free mustache ride.

Be brutally honest with any defects and the like. Paint chips? Photograph each and every one of them, noting the quantity and severity. Mechanical issues that might not be? Mention them, refer to any TSB's or major forum tracking posts you can think of. In my experience, even though a car may not be perfect, someone who has been diligent in keeping up with the car is going to have no trouble selling it simply because you can help to remove the "unknown" factor by providing that information. Like IncomprehensibleWaterBoy mentioned, be cooperatively friend - but I would go a step further and recommend to do that up-front.

I agree with the comments to yield the best sales price. A clean car sells fast if you can get someone to test drive it.
A lot of people cannot come up with 17K and realize there are many other options for newer vehicles at that price point.

Be realistic about the price. Be flexible in price and with meeting for a test drive.
Your car is out of warantee. Have service records ESPECIALLY of everything after the 4 yr 50K warantee. Oil change frequency, type of oil ect. Make sure there are no service codes and the SES light is not lighted.
55K is relative low miles but this is a 328XI, not a 330XI.

I would settle for $16K.
Craigslist is a great place to advertize in Columbus, Cincinati and Akron.

Hope this helps

Best practice: If potential customer notices a defect, acknowledge the situation and immediately resolve the objection with a workable solution. Then, resume....be prepared.

All my buyers appreciated that I presented them with a complete portfolio of service invoices. On top of that, I brought serious buyers to a reliable BMW indy shop and let them see that the car was in great shape...NO issues. It didn't cost me much...and the complete 'records' and indy shop "bill of health" statement SEALED THE DEAL for me. This was with my (former) E46 M3. I was asking "above" market price...and got it. First, you have to know your car and maintenace record.

What all these guys said. But, if you are having trouble you are probably over priced for your market. Everyone wants to get the maximum and everyone wants to give the minimum.

Advertise it on Bimmerfest! That's how I sold one of my cars (although I also placed ads on the local BMWCCA site, and a few other enthusiast sites that were local to my area)... I also did not get what I initially asked for, but I was happy that the person who bought it would appreciate it as well as I did.
