Refreshed Appreciation for the 'd

I've had my 335d since January of this year, and have put on over 29k miles (I drive ~1k miles per week). As with any car, you just kind of settle in to it after a while and it can lose some of its luster.

Last Wednesday (11 days ago) I took my car in to the dealer where I bought it and have had it maintained in Northwest Arkansas for the A/C belt squeal. I live in Little Rock but am up there generally once per week for work so I prefer to keep all services at a single dealer. They didn't have the belt in stock and I needed to get back to LR Thursday afternoon, with a weekend trip with the family planned in Dallas that weekend, so I ended up with a 328i loaner. It had the sport and premium packages I believe. While it was like my car appearance wise, it felt a bit softer and really slow off the line. It seemed to have a hesitation when you first hit the gas, and when the throttle finally did open up it was anemic at best. It had decent mid range and was a smoother engine than the 'd.

I drove it to Dallas and back over the weekend then was out of town for work until this past Thursday. It was nice getting into the 328 after the Hyundai Accent rental car, but still felt lacking. On Friday the dealer delivered my car down to me and took the 328 back.

Oh. My. God. What a welcome change to get all that torque back! This thing runs like a raped ape compared to the 328! While I could live with the 328, I have been completely and totally spoiled by the down-low thrust of the diesel, combined with the far better mileage and better handling (I have the sport package). This short time away from my car really made me fall back in love with it all over again.

Just felt the need to share. For those of you weighing your options, do not hesitate to get the diesel!

Plus it's fun to get the stares from the rednecks at the gas pump.

If they build the new 3 series coupe in diesel I may have to add one.

I had exactly the same experience when recently driving the 328i loaner.

Push on the accelerator....push more....did I leave the parking brake on?
Torque has spoiled me.

Separate topic, but last week had a mechanic guy run out of the service bay
to the Diesel fuel island to alert me to the fact that I was pumping Diesel into my BMW....

I can relate. Recently had a minor kiss with another cars bumper so while my 335d was in the shop I had a Nissan Maxima rental.

Really enjoyed getting back in my car. Even though the Maxima "should" be barely faster to 60 than the 335d, the d felt like an electron gun accelerating vs. the Nissan. And oh I am so glad to be out of a front driver. Yuck.

Now THAT is a good story. My local station only has diesel on one island and it is the rear of a pair. It is a pretty busy place and while i have gotten a double take a couple of times from other drivers at the use ofnthe green handled pump, I know the day is coming when I will be flilling and blocking the front island and a car load of gang bangers will tell me to pull up.
