I just re-read through the entire thread to see who came closest to diagnosing the problem and it seems like PP94 came the closest

This problem and resulting solution remind me to always use the KISS (keep is simple stupid) principle.

Interesting about the shifter cable, have not personally seen a problem on the forums like that lately.
