Actually if you look at the ordering guide posted somewhere in this forum, it lists only 710 - M steering wheel as standard, while 7XA is a NC option... So I guess it's up to the dealer to request it...

That is correct. Luckily I happened to mention looking forward to the paddle shifters to my CA, he looked at our submitted build sheet to see that indeed - the 710 naked wheel is what came up by default. He was able to change it to the 7XA paddle-shifter model. I was glad I just happened to mention it, and he thought to double-check it. At first we both assumed the paddle shifter was the default, just like it is on other M models, but not the X1 for some reason.

OK, I'm officially confused. The attached equipment schedule clearly states that the paddle shifters are standard on the M Sport. My order breakdown also indicates the paddle shifters are standard. The dealer never asked me which steering wheel I wanted when we configured the order, so I had/have no reason to question whether or not my car will be so equipped. Hopefully my completed car will soon find a ride across the pond so I can confirm for myself.

But it does show the M steering wheel, which I believe is only available with paddle shifters. Did you track your car's progress on BMW's website? It should specifically list the paddle shifters.

Good luck! Hopefully it comes the way you wanted.

I also wonder if it's a such big deal for them to just change steering wheels at the dealer, I wouldn't think so, it must be somewhat modular.

Why would paddles be a no cost option instead of standard? Do the paddles have the potential to hinder?

I didn't realize that headlight washer are standard on the 35i. Are they standard across the X line? I thought most people don't like these...

Has anyone verified that the "naked" 710 wheel actually doesn't have paddle shifters? What exactly is the difference between the 710 wheel and the 7XA? Since you can order paddle shifters on a non-M sport, what is the wheel designation for non-M sport and paddle shifters (i.e. is that the 7XA wheel)?

Non M wheel with shifters is 2XA - it's NC with sport line, $120 otherwise.
And yes Beamerboi verified that his M sport car has no shifters.

M Sport comes standard with 710 M Steering wheel.
7XA is a NC option for the M Sport leather steering wheel w/paddles.

I don't see a 2XA option under the sport line.

On BMWNA's website:

Unique design touches include:

Sport Suspension
Exclusive 18" M Sport wheels
Sport Seats
M Steering Wheel with shift paddles
High-gloss roof rails
Dark aluminum or wood trim
M Aerodynamic Kit

Enjoy all these signature details for $3000.

Regardless your CA should have mentioned something to you when you were ordering the car.

I am glad now that I had to pay $120 for the shifters on my X-line, and be sure that they will be in the car when it arrives. I am so used to using the paddle shifters on my 545i SMG; which is the only way to drive it smoothly, that I cursed BMW for charging extra for them. I would be more upset if the paddles were free, but did not get them.

Are you kidding me? My CA didn't mention anything, and it looks like I have the 710 wheel on my order form... one of the reasons I did the M-sport package was the paddle shifters...

Actually now I've got conflicting information... On the order sheet from my dealer, it lists only the 710 wheel, but on the VIN check at BMWUSA, it lists:

M Sport Line
High-gloss Roof Rails
Sport suspension
Increased top speed limiter
M steering wheel
M Sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters
Aerodynamic kit
Sport seats
Anthracite headliner
Shadowline exterior trim
Chrome-line exterior trim

SO I guess I'll just have to wait and see when the car arrives in a few weeks...

I ordered mine last week and the dealer invoice has the standard 710 M steering wheel. I called the dealer and they can't make a change to the order since it has already gone through. I called BMW customer relations and they said only the dealer can handle the issue. That would involve placing a new order for the car.

Customer service already sucks. I told them they need to fix their car builder to let you know there is an option. Apparently as a consumer you have to know more than the BMW dealer on what you want even though the website does not give you the option.

My CA still can't figure out whether or not my car will have the paddle shifters. My disappointment is not only with the lack of information, but with the misinformation as well. If all that I'm reading here is correct, the information provided by BMW is just plain inaccurate. Paddle shifters are suppose to be standard on the M Sport. I can't find a single place where they're listed as optional.

I'm upset as well. The person who input the build order was given the information from the Internet sales agent I was dealing with. He assumed she went over it with me and everything was correct. He never asked if I wanted the paddle shifter option. When I go online to check the status of the order it has conflicting information.

I feel for you guys, and I do hope that BMW will make good on their own literature and advertisements; retrofit paddles or wheel replacement, perhaps?

The lessons to be learned from this thread:
Do not completely trust the BMW website
Do not completely trust BMW documentation
Do always ask to see the dealer's build sheet with all option codes and double check it for yourself against the order guide. And do this before your car is in production!

On this note, I have to give big props to my CA, Justin@NCBMW, who's a Fest sponsor as well Not only did he catch that the paddle shifters are a NC option for the Sport line, but he added them for me before I even asked him to add them. He just assumed that I wanted this freebie! How great is that? It really pays off to deal with CA's who know what they're doing, and I'm really lucky in this aspect. Thank you Justin!
