e36 325i Engine Cleaning

Guys how can i clean my 325i engine without getting water into the plugs section? Tried it once and the car started running very rough and had to get the plugs out to get the water out, not much and not all plugs but enough to run rough/backfire

Usually most of us here take tons of plastic and cover the electronics. Then feel free to go to town with the water. Else grab a bottle of Simple Green (or similar grease remover) and a toothbrush.

Yes I do use grease remover and brush, leave it for a while then water to wash away all the grease etc obviously careful enough not to spray any onto delicate parts and your engine is sparkling clean, so I guess the plastic route you suggested is the safest, thanks!
