Smile 650i exhaust tips -sport M vs non M

Well, I've decided to go for a '13 to get exact config that I want ( and the extra 45hp, soft close doors) And am torn between M sport or not. Like the package except for the non illuminated door sills and the black tipped exhaust tips. Can anybody tell me if the tips are removable so I can swap out chrome version, local dealer has no 6 ers in stock to check.

Thanks

Not sure about the mechanical aspects of it, but I'd imagine it is possible and pretty straight forward.

Here's a picture comparison while we're on the topic (hopefully one of the guys who knows a lot about the engineering of these cars *cough*Bonz*cough* can weigh in on this - until then, I've got you covered for the pics and superficial toys ).

Thanks Southern,

Hoping the tips are "extensions" and are removable. My guess it they would be. Anybody have a chance to check under the bumper and take a look would be great.

I'm sure glad you opted to stay away from that Imola 12' they were teasing $$$ the hell out of you on !!

Go with the M Sport, yea it's easy to spend other peoples $$$...buhahaha. AND with the M Sport you get the highly addictive and oh so delectable sound package....ummm nice.

Here are some pics of as much of the exhaust system as I could without pulling things apart - that would end badly . I'm embarassed to post these given the visible filth, but I figured it wasn't worth washing today since a hurricane is about to do a number on it Don't ask me to explain any of the parts in the pictures. I know the vertical cylinder thingy controls the flappy thing that opens and closes based on the DDC settings. Other than that, I know these are the poo shoots where the loud booming sound comes from that makes the ///M Sport Package worth its weight in gold

The angle of these pictures sure makes the tires look thin. Just an observation...

Thanks again Southern, yeah we are going to get the Hurricane/tropical system here in N Florida over next day as well. Certainly looks like the exhaust tips would come off. I can check with BMW parts dept to confirm.

Shakedaddy: Yes after much deliberation I decided against the '12. Mostly for 2 reasons - wrong color interior & the improvements to the '13. And I am surprised to report that the USAA program I will use to purchase, already is giving in the $12,000 range off a optioned 2013 650 coupe. Can't believe it so early in the model year. So price difference is basically not getting the option credit. Mine would be close to yours - so look forward to seeing your pics.

Slightly off topic but just an interesting note,

looking at your Coupe's exhuast system, I noticed that there's something missing compared to my Convertible; namely torsion link. Guess it's for extra body strength since there's no B, C pillar and the roof for that matter, for support on convertibles.

And to answer OP's question,
there's no part number for the exhuast tips of 6 series.
That goes same for both non-M and M version, and for Coupe and convertible and even the new gran coupe.

In contrast, 640i's have parts number for it's round exhuast tips; the chrome tips seem to be clip on's that you can slip in.

I am quite convinced that the chrome or dark chrome exhaust tips of 650i's are actullay molded with the exhaust system, specific for non-M and M sports version respectively.
They are probably a set made from the factory.

As mentioned in previous post I will be installing the M version exhaust system (and the exhaust tip hopefully) in couple of weeks, so I'll post some pictures just in case you haven't decided yet.

Personally the bright chrome goes well with the non-M and dark chrome also looks pretty good with the M package; go for the M package!

And one other thing about the M package while we are at it;
unlike the 5 series and 3 series M packages, the 6 series M package does nothing to the suspension or spring of the car, so essentially the ride hardness and stiffness (and cornering and nose diving etc) is the same between non-M and M. This is confirmed by the fact that 3, 5 have M specific front and rear strut mounting parts numbers while 6 does not.
Kind of dissappointed (and relieved) since the current 6 series spring is a little bit too soft for me even in Sports setting. and it tends to waggle a little on speed bumps...

CHS is correct. These tips do not seem to be replaceable, at least not without some delicate cutting and welding. But the point is sort of moot since the exhaust finishers cannot be purchased separately. To get M-Sport with chrome tips you would have to purchase the entire rear box section, left and right, which I'm sure from a dealer isn't cheap.

Perhaps you can make a deal for a swap before you take delivery. However, this forces your parts department to inventory the take-off parts.

Perhaps the OP can trade with CHS.

Thanks guys, sounds like it would not be so easy to do a swap. Just thought the chrome finishers would look nice with the black insert.
