Do you think a 740il w/moderate high miles make it cross country?

Since bimmerfest east is probably not happening, (so i hear) I've been considering taking the old 7 series cross country to bimmerfest west at the end of May.

The car is at 138,000 miles. I recently had the intake mani pulled and all gaskets/pcv replaced. Check engine light wont go off but I know that issue has been taken care of. But I really don't know why the light is still on . At 60mph, the whole car shakes. It shakes increasingly when I go over 60 but it tries to stabilize. This may be do to a poor alignment and wheel balance and or tires. When I brake over 60mph, the whole car shakes even more and becomes violent. I had the upper rad hose replaced since it failed but I have not replaced the bottom one yet.

If I do decide to go on with the road trip I will put new tires on and change all the fluids. I do not know what is causing the shakes if the new tires + alignment/balance doesn't fix anything. Is there anything else that may need refreshing? Are these cars reliable enough to pull this off? I don't want to end up on the side of the road, 2,000 miles away from home. I could take the 5 series but that car would bore me to sleep and the M3 would make me go deaf and I would like it to stay low miles.

If you can't figure out why the check engine light is on, and you can't fix the shaking, I certainly wouldn't drive it. However, as to age/mileage, I just drove a 2001 740iL with 181,000 miles from Chicago to Tulsa, 700 miles, in about 11 hours. There is no reason age or mileage should be a factor in a properly maintained car.

The shake you are having is the same as I had it is you control arms and other front end parts my wife and I redid
the front end in about 6 hours we bought a front end kit off of ebay worked great and no more shake the kit was under 400
it included all the front end part (no struts) and it had the rear control arms and all other parts. I will try and find the kit number
if you would like and post it later. If you decide to do the front end make sure you resurface the rotors to or in time
you will take the new parts out again.

Did you then take it in to get it aligned or did you attempt to do the alignment yourself?

Please do post the kit number. I searched ebay and found a wide variety of kits, mostly just front end only kits that averaged around $200 + or -.

As t97 said that distance in a well maintained veh is no problem. At the moment I would not drive your car to go shopping. Do you not have a trustworthy indi?

I've just changed my wiper blades and now my reverse lights don't work. Should I change my fuel pump relay?

My 97 5.4 v12 just rolled over to 314k miles and still runs like a dream. If they're taken care of before you get your hands on them and you maintain the integrity of the engine along with its cooling system I believe they'll go a million miles. Met a guy the other week at the gas station with a 740, forgot the year but it was an e38.. 940k miles. Looked at it myself, I wouldn't believe him until I did.

I have a 1995 740i now with 162K. I redid the front end steering components (the most hammered were the drag link and the tie-rod ends...also the easiest) got an alignment and would drive it anywhere. I would be concerned about an alignment place that didn't inspect and point out the problems. They are typically fairly obvious even to us DIY types and when I went to get an alignment, the tech pointed out several things to me, suggesting I do them first before spending money with him on alignment. I had good results (for about 20K now) with parts from a ebay vendor called "***********". Good luck. Oh yes...I also invested in a Peake Tool which reads my 1995 great. 97 and later an OBDII should tell you what's up with the CEL.

My friend has a 0i sport 514k and it looks and runs like new. Back to your question, I wouldn't put new tires on a car that shimmies and shake's unless I had it checked out first, could be nothing could be everything. Tires are the last thing after checking all the other options so you don't ruin them..........I drove my 01 sport from LA to NYC once ran like a Champ !

From LA to NYC! 514k! How many times have the guides/trans gone out in the 514k? What are things to do before a road trip in an e38?

Major service and ALL fluid and filter changes. Good wheel alignment. Do it about 3-4 weeks before the trip.
