Drivetrain Malfunction!

So I have 760 miles on my car and suddenly at a stop light, it starts to shudder badly. Then the Drivetrain Malfunction warning popped up on the screen and in the dash. Then I proceed to curse a couple times.

Pulled over to the side of the road, I threw it in park and turned it off and SOS'd. Well they were of no help, I guess they can detect how many people are in the car, what airbags go off, and what type of accident it is, but cant see the computer's fault codes.

So I called the dealership closest to me, and they said it was OK if when I turn it back on, it doesn't do it again. So I drove it to the dealership, drove normal all the way there ~12 miles.

After 2 hours...

"Found fault #140501 for Cyl #5, Swapped coils and cleared fault. Test drove..."

Was that just a freak incident? I asked my service advisor if she'd ever seen that before, but not on this generation 7's. Maybe I should post this in the 3 forum for the 335's N54 (same engine)?

Well it drives fine, and the first service visit was exemplary. Hopefully thats the only bump in the road.

Chris

Had the same thing on my previous generation 750. Happened once earlier on and then never again.

WTH, just 760 miles and you had this!!! I had this beginning of the month, dealer kept it for 2 days to check. They reset my computer since it reported a fuel pump problem but when they check, there wasn't anything wrong with it. The car is fine after I got it back, I just hope I won't see it again.

It seems with ALL BMWs, these little glitches/snafus happen. Most resolve themselves. I think as long as most buyers demand more and more gadgets, more performance, less fuel used, etc, etc Car makers are using more and more software and computerized components. Just think about how many times one must re-start their PC or iPhone? Well...that's what's sadly happening with all our cars. Foreign and Domestic!

SO frustrating, and so sorry! DO not listen to family!!! We've had just as many problems with Mercedes, and I've had 2 bad (one VERY) bad Range Rovers!! BMW does seems to be plagued with a lot of electical gremlins, but I think all high end cars are about the same. We pay top $$$ for something, and we expect it to be flawless. It's hard to accept it, but with all the high demands and cars loaded with gadgets, technology....there is just a lot to go wrong! Good Luck!

Good luck with resolution, may the car issues get resolved ASAP.

Hahaha! She's mad I took the badges off! That explains it

Well hopefully they can figure out what is going on, the ride has been compromised as well. First time it was shuddering at a stop light, now it felt like I was driving in a truck lane on the freeway everywhere I go, like the suspension was having major issues. Getting a vibration from the front. I got my tires and wheels properly mounted and balanced, so it's not that, I drove with it after and was silky smooth.

On side note I got a 328 loaner, the new stop-start system, at least in the 3 series is just awful. Very jerky, my service advisor said they've got nothing but complaints from it, yikes.

Hopefully they can figure it out, I really got it for a steal, and I don't honestly like the looks of the '13 model. And they have one more attempt, 2/3 now.

What if there was a nice leftover 2012 750iL on the lot? For the same amount of money, would that make you happy?

It's sad to see so many new F01/02s here got little problem here and there when purchased new. Especially this model has been out since 2009.

Forgot to update what happened on #2 Drivetrain Malfunction...

"Found fault #168008 For Knock Sensor #1"

They replaced the knock sensor. How could that make the car's ride worse on the freeway? It was gone after they replaced the sensor. Odd

Maybe the car wasn't running right so you felt shaking on the HWY?

BTW< I like your new sig! The SRT looks bigger than the 7!

How about the interior volume, especially the rear seats compare? And trunk? I didn't even have a chance to test drove the car since the sales pissed me off so soon.

Exclamation 740 Li Drivetrain Malfunction

Just had the same problem with my 2011 740 Li with 41,000 miles. Car shutters as it drives. We shall see what the service department says. Mine has all the badges by the way!

Got back in my car to take it to dealer and the problem was gone. Must have been a computer glitch of some kind.

I am taking my car in tomorrow for the same problem. Drivetrain malfunction every time I start it cold. So annoying...these errors are why I sold my 745Li and 645ci. I am sick of the constant errors and dings. Also started leaking oil, and had a chassis malfunction one day randomly (hasn't returned however). BMW needs to build a reliable car. I'm done with the company after this. And yes, I said the same thing last time and ended up with another one.

My "drivetrain malfunction" was fixed with a new battery and a complete software upgrade. They found leaking current in the camera module even when off, that was draining my battery.

Even though I love this car, and wish could just upgrade to a Bentley, the sad truth is that this will be traded in as soon as the warranty runs out. And not to another BMW.

Same problem

Had same exact problem with my '09 750Li @56K. Brought it in, the dealer tried the same trick swapping coils, failed right away. Two weeks later the still have the car. No idea when I am getting it back. Very frustrating

Agreed - it is what it is, especially across the German luxury brands.
