The new Idrive is a big deal in several ways. Major hardware upgrade - look at specs: New on left old on right. Plus features like dual source feed for real time traffic/weather/stock info, ect. Improved bluetooth pairing, ect, ect. In my case it's a matter or ordering now and getting the outdated system or waiting for a March build. Can't stay ahead, but don't want to start behind right off the bat either.

Intel processor 1.3Ghz vs Renesas 600Mhz
1GB RAM (vs 512Mb)
8GB flash (vs 512Mb)
Nvidia graphics (vs Fujitsu)
200GB hard drive (vs 80Gb)

New software renders all Nav in #3D.

This question is a little off topic, but somewhat fitting...

How do y'all typically view the nav. instructions on the iDrive screen: perspective view or direction of travel?

I typically keep it in direction of travel but pull up perspective view if I'm showing off the system as it looks cool. If I'm legitimately in need of navigation help, I find the flat map to be easier to follow.

That being said... I rarely look at the iDrive screen as I rely pretty heavily on the HUD for the graphics. Nevertheless, I'm just curious if y'all like the perspective view or, like me, admire its coolness but don't love it in reality.

Any recent updates on this by chance? When I was at Service, the SVC Manager I've known for over a decade and I chatted for about an hour about different things. He highly recommended I purchase this car, and told me I could just do a software update for the 3D maps, etc. Obviously, when I spoke with him, I didn't know about some of the other improvements.

Although the 650i Convertible isn't expected to receive all updates until March Production, is there any change any of the hardware will be upgraded prior to then, or will all the hardware remain the outdated hardware with a full upgrade in March?

Extremely hard to get details about this from BMW. Several different CA's simply go silent when I ask about the 6 series getting the new Idrive. Honestly believe they are instructed not to share this info with the public. My guess would be so prospective buyers do not wait to buy. But everything I have read says this major upgrade is both hardware & software. Don't think you can just do the software. New Nvidia graphics likely allow for the 3D renderings.
I would say wait, as I am- they should start taking orders in late Jan for Mar production

It's not that they are instructed "not to say" - it's that 99.9% of CA's really have no idea. Information tends to be available on websites like this long before BMW informs people at the dealership level.

Really sad, and I kinda agree with JordanM3...many are simply clueless. This really irritates me. I know there is always "more" right around the corner, but, this is a huge upgrade and I feel it is absolutely insane of BMW to not release the very first F12/F13 model without adding these upgrades. Although the 3-series is the hottest seller and in a tough market, there is really no excuse to have upgraded all these other vehicles before a Flagship vehicle...

UGH...I'm definitely going to wait. Thanks for the information.

SS, exactly what I have been saying since they released the absurd rollout schedule for the new Idrive. How can they justify putting the latest tech in a 3 or 5 series but leave a flagship model rolling off the line with obsolete hardware. Crazy & illogical. They can keep it as quite as they want, I won't buy until it's in the 650.

But when a potential customer knows about the issue and asks their CA, don't you agree that they should look into it and get the information for that customer? We are talking about a $90K car not a toaster at Target. My impression of BMW corporate on issues like this and special order items is of arrogance or dismissal.

I'm 35 now and I've had tons of BMW since my first at 15. I can tell you from experience, BMWNA is extremely arrogant and dismissive when it comes to the desires of loyal customers. I've had a few rough run ins with them, and they definitely aroused my fighting spirits; they blatantly broke laws and couldn't care less.

Joe.....since you already have been holding out I say wait 3 extra months for a 2014. You just never know what also may be included and your car would still arrive with plenty of summer left in August 2013.

And the worst part is that you are still buying their cars. I am not blaming you, it just sucks that they can get away with it.

Shakedaddy,

I am thinking the same thing. It looks like the full LED dash is on tap for '14. Kind of hate to keep waiting on the other hand. But of course if they finally include the long desired power trunk closer, it would make it easier to hang on !! ( The most ridiculous omission in history)

Couldn't agree more with the non acomodating customer relationship that BMWUSA has with folks like us, that spend towsends of dollars on their product. That attitude, is what drove me away 3 years ago to a jaguar XK. But the reality is, they make darn good cars and; here I am, waiting anxiously for my new 640i to make the trip from South carolina to my dealership...
Is your car here Mr DJSaad? it is my beleive that our completion dates in Germany were pretty close together.

My car is on the way from South Carolina as well. We were probably on the same boat. It should be here any day now, hopefully I will be able to pick it up this weekend.

What did you decide for tires? My set up is suppose to hit my house Friday, Rims from California; michelins from Cinci.

I got the vossen cv4 wheels, a little worried on how they are going to look on the car, but might as well try them out. And I got the super sport tires, I will drop the wheels and tires off at the dealer when the car arrives. They don't have a problem with putting them on.

ROFL, funny thing is, after I got really pissed off at them, I vowed to never buy another BMW, checked out the Lexus, Mercedes, and Audi's...then, after being totally frustrated, I purchased another BMW three months later! Can we say, "hooked"? UGH

for some odd reason Bmw is treating 6 series lineup as a step son. For example

Power tailgate = not available

Soft close doors = not available

Updated comfort acces opening via foot = not available

Auto high beam are $250 stand alone option in other bmw and in 6 you must pay $1800 along with LED

What makes me upset is that all the above options are available in a lower class 5 series.

Soft close doors are now available for 2013. Corporate doesn't make a lot of sense on some of the options. I still don't think there is much of a choice between a 6'er or a 5'er with foot control and a self closing trunk.

yes you are right about soft close doors but its not listed in the website. i had to personally call my CA to find out the pricing and add it for me. i guess BMW thinks 6 series does not need it. lol

Yes, soft close is available, but ONLY if your willing to pay $4500 for the Exec Pkg - they should be standard on a $90K car!! and it's still unbelievable a power trunk closer is not standard or at least available. I mean it's on $45K Lexus for christ's sake. Really having a problem rationalizing some of the crap BMW is pulling off.

Another reason I think you should wait for the 2014's. These goodies might be stand alone options or even standard for next year ..... but I would be surprised if this is a deal breaker for you.

Personally I could care less about not having these two features, especially when you have the 650i good looks and 480 Lbs of TQ is lined up with that beautiful 8-speed automatic at a mere 2000RPM.

Well, I admit it's a small feature but even a CA I met last month to test drive a '13 was "shocked" the 650 did not have a power trunk closer. I mean to have to slam a trunk shut to close a $100,000 car (optioned) is insane. A long list of lesser vehicles have it as standard.
Another one bugging me is the omission of lane departure/Blind spot warning as standard equip. To have to pay $1900 for these features in a car at this price level is insulting. I was looking at a new altima/accord for the wife and both have it on the V6 versions for $30K.

Might seem like heresy, but I am very curious what the all new '14 Vette is going to look like next month. At 450HP/450Lb TQ for 50K it may not be a 6 series, but it's also half the price.
