I really don't like the further incremental increase in wheelbase/size from E90 to F30 and am thinking it will feel more E39-like.
BMW will most likely make a 1 series sedan for the US market, which is why the F30 got so much bigger, to make room for a smaller sedan.

I'd wait for that if size is that important. Hopefully it's not as ugly as the new 1 series hatch.

I know this is against board rules but I don't care how fat he is, at least he's breaking that state legislature, which is a cancer to this state.

No joke. I'm actually curious now what Christie rides in? Escalade? Hummer? I think they are both too small.

I have seen plenty of big macs in small cars so that argument does not fly with me.

We are getting OT, but as Governor of NJ, probably some sort of limo.

Also not a big tech guy so I view that as a negative. I'm not looking for comfortable, that's why i hated the E39.

gotta say that A3 sedan is appealing, but shudder at the thought of buying a first model year Audi even though the A3 hatch has been out a while.
Looks like you know what you want and what you dislike about the F30. So what is the confusion then? Its apparently clear that you have your mind set on something that looks like the A3 which the F30 is not, so F30 may not be the car for you. Don't get me wrong but I am a die-hard F30 fan and have my 335xi on order. I love the fact that it is bigger than the previous model. Its just boils down to personal preference and drive feel. I'd love to see another person join the F30 club but by no means should you do it if you will not enjoy driving it.

Just my 2 cents

Personally, I'm happy the F30 is bigger. Never could figure out how a 55K car was so small and pedestrian looking no matter how good it drove. Now the car looks and feels more high end, befitting it's price point. There's the 1 series and the Z4 if you want a smaller sporty Bimmer to zip around in.

You wanna talk about big.....the F12/13 6 series is a whale. It's 192 inches long. Why would BMW build the car that darn big. It has humongus legroom but it didn't need to be that big to have the room it has. Good thing is it felt smaller than it looked when I test drove it. Hard to know for sure on a 20 minute test drive but BMW seems to know how to shrink the car around you.

I'm sorry but can't this thread simply be solved by driving the freaking car?

An f30 with the sport suspension will drive like a smaller, tighter car than the e90 non-sport (or an e90 all wheel drive version).

It is very similar in size to an e39. I've met people who driven an e39 who thought they drive like a boat, and if you drove a 525i/528i base package, I agree. I drove a 528i base automatic that made me want to introduce it's front end to a telephone pole and spare the world it's dynamics.

Of course, I've also driven e39 540i sport package'd and now own an e39 m5 with a dinan stage 2 suspension.

My 4000 pound e39 now handles like an e46/e90 sport-suspension'd car.

It's not the size, it's how it carries it's weight.

P.s. Chris Christie drives around in GM-based SUVs, just like Jon Corzine did before him. Corzine was busted on the NJ turnpike for chronically speeding. Most famously when his driver (a state police officer) was doing 91mph when he crashed and Corzine was not wearing a seat belt. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/18/ny...pagewanted=all

This is an interesting comment vis a vis E39 compared to F30 328i.

Quote:
In October '96 Motor Trend tested the newly released E39 BMW 540i V8 automatic, considered by some the best generation of BMW's 5 series. Compared to it, the current 328i automatic:

- is less than an inch shorter in wheelbase and 5.5 inches shorter in length
- has an inch more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more front headroom
- has 6 more cubic feet of trunk space
- weighs over 300 pounds less
- gets a whopping 6 mpg city and 12 mpg highway more in EPA ratings
- 6/10th's quicker to 60 and 4/10th's quicker in the quarter mile
- braked from 60 mph 20 feet shorter
- generated a tenth more g force in cornering force, .80 to .90
- base price is almost $15k less.

You said you couldn't find one which was well kept. With 58K miles it may very well have been kept up well. And for that, and given it's a ZHP, you're going to have to pay a premium. A 330i is not a 330i ZHP...you're comparing a model which sold in large numbers (relatively speaking) to one that sold in small numbers. Furthermore the $21K is the asking price. You can probably negotiate it down somewhat. So it doesn't appear that you can't find a well-kept ZHP...it's that you're unable to find a well-kept ZHP for the price of an average 330i.

I think a lot of people here on the 'Fest would like the 3 series to stop getting larger and loose some lbs. When I went from an e46 to an e93 it did seem bigger (it is of course) but not so much that it was an issue. On paper the F30 looks too big, but it does drive smaller. For me the ideal would be between the e46 and e93. Of course that won't happen and when the time comes I'm sure I will get use to the F3x 3 series. Unless the cafe make it impossible to get 335 type power. That is a deal braker for me. I have to agree, the 1 series isn't too small, it is just too ugly. N4S

I'm keeping my E46 as my daily driver but when we go on a weekend trip, guess which car is used - the F30 just feels and is more comfortable for longer drives. Interesting side note, it takes me about 1 1/2 times as long to wash the F30 as it takes for the E46 - just more nooks and crannies to wipe down.

The F30 is similar in many dimensions (though shorter), and I've read where it's compared to E39. For reference, I HATED the E39. Felt like a barge next to the E46. I'm very afraid that I'll make the same mistake twice if I give my zhp to my son and buy myself an F30 M-sport.

Anyone share this concern? I've also considered the 135, but to me it seems significantly smaller than an E46 sedan even though the dimensions are not too far off.

I want a replacement damn near the same size as my E46!
What about a 1series if you feel its so big.

Part of the reason for BMW to introduce the 1 series is that people were complaining about the 3 series getting too big. So they just went ahead and created a whole new market.

It is definitely not the car for me. I am guessing that most people looking to buy a ZHP will want it with the 6-speed manual.
