Cool Oil type in extreme weather

Hey guys, looking for input on oil types. I have a '98 528i with 88k miles and I live in the desert of So Cal. In the winter, temps range from about 40 to 80F and in summer (April to November) they range from about 80 to 110F, sometimes in the 120's.
Would you recommend synthetic 10W40 for summer and maybe 05W30 for winter? Also, in the extreme heat here, would you go about 7-8,000 miles on synthetic oil?
