Fuel Consumption

My 325i 2001 has 220,000 miles but the cylinder compression is perfect. The fuel consumption got worse the past few months from 460 to 390 miles per tank. I changed spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter without a difference at all. There is no air leaks. I did not have this the previous winters but a small change. The "check engine" is off. What else may cause this?

Petrol quality. Might be a bad batch of fuel, have you changed fuel in the past few months?

O2 sensors. Usually you get about 100k out of pre-cat sensors before mileage starts to suffer. Post cats wait for a code/light to trip.

I think ahull nailed it....at this mileage, you should have gone through two sets of O2 sensors....

460 is great mileage. I only get about 350 miles from a tank. usually about 14 1/2 gallons as i dont like to run it all the way down.
I always wondered when i would throw a code for bad o2 sensors. At 170k now, bought the car at 97k and have never done them. $77 bucks each and probably a pain to get out.

if you know someone that can solder (which is very easy) you can get them for about half that and they are right on top of the exhaust manifold so easy to get to. that's the pre-cats. post cats are a different story but those can go much longer.

i think your mileage will suffer due to the pre-cats failing even before you get a code.
